Description
The summer of 1991, when the Black Album was released and a metal whirlwind of the century was about to sweep through the nation. Now, a powerful live set has arrived that lets you experience that frenzied scene. This release contains two recordings born from one show. It’s a two-disc audience recording with a superb recording of the “Budapest performance on August 22, 1991” on DISC 1 and the full video on DISC 2. The Black Album era was a time when the band embarked on a massive world tour from 1991 to 1994, fulfilling the world’s desires, and during that time they transformed from a metallic edge to a groove-oriented style. The ensemble changed so much between the beginning and the end of the tour that it was as if they were two different bands. Of course, fans are drawn to the early period. While possessing the “heaviness” of the Black Album, they also had the sharp metal sensibility of the pre-Metal Justice era. This release is a rare record that allows you to experience that prime period in superb detail. So, just how early is this release? Let’s begin by exploring the overview of the activities that took place during that time when the era began to surge and move forward. 1991 – August 1st + 2nd: Petaluma (2 shows) [Black Album released August 12th] – August 10th – September 28th: Europe #1 (20 shows) ←★HERE★ – October 12th – December 23rd: North America #1 (34 shows) ←※TORONTO 1991 1ST NIGHT – December 31st: Tokyo Dome show 1992 – January 4th – April 16th: North America #2a (65 shows) ←※Official San Diego footage – April 20th: Appearance at Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert – May 6th – July 5th: North America #2b (39 shows) – July 17th – October 6th: Joint tour with GUNS (26 shows in North America) – October 22nd – December 18th: Europe #2 (36 shows) ←※DEN BOSCH 1992 etc. This is METALLICA from 1991/1992. Speaking of 1991, our store is also familiar with the masterpiece “TORONTO 1991 1ST NIGHT (Shades 1872),” but this work is from nearly three months earlier. It was the fourth show of “Europe #1,” just 10 days after the release of “The Black Album.” This “Europe #1” was also part of the “Monsters Of Rock” tour, headlined by AC/DC. This release is a set that conveys that event in a superb live album and full video. Let’s introduce each one individually. DISC 1: A legendary recording with incredible depth and closeness, almost like a soundboard The main feature of this work is a top-notch audience recording. It has been made into a CD from the best master provided by a core fan overseas, and it is incredibly powerful! The venue, “Puskás Ferenc Stadium,” is an open-air stadium with a wide-open sky above, and there are no ceilings or walls to reflect sound. The sound, captured with zero reverberation, is free from any muddiness or distortion, and even the smallest details are crystal clear. While there is a slight sense of space in the tone, the sheer thickness, directness, and fine detail—every element is soundboard quality. This sound perfectly matches the live performance. As mentioned earlier, this period combines heaviness with a metallic edge. This recording captures both aspects perfectly, with the deep bass that shakes your insides and the attacks that kick into your gut being vividly clear. Furthermore, you can fully appreciate the sharpness of the gritty guitar riffs. DISC 2: Breathtaking footage that lets you witness everything without any obstructions Even the legendary recording alone is enough to fill your heart, but this release also includes a video section that will satisfy you even more. The audience shots taken from the back of the venue offer a magnificent view with no obstructions whatsoever. In reality, there are limits to zooming in on distant shots, but at key moments, you can shift your focus to the screen footage and enjoy multi-camera pro-shot footage taken by the on-site staff. The audio is synchronized with the same superb recording as the main live album. You can experience this historic event with a powerful sound that rivals a soundboard recording. Another point is that this video version is longer in running time than the live album version. Let’s organize the setlist while comparing them here. Cliff Burton era (8 songs) Kill ‘Em All: Seek And Destroy (★) / Whiplash Ride the Lightning: Creeping Death / Fade To Black / For Whom The Bell Tolls Master of Puppets: Master Of Puppets / Battery Cover: Am I Evil? Jason Newsted era (5 songs) Metal Justice: Harvester Of Sorrow / One Black Album: Enter Sandman / Sad But True Cover: Last Caress *Note: “★” indicates that it is included only in the video version (DISC 2). …and that’s how it is. The live album version (DISC 1) is missing “Seek And Destroy,” but the video version has it all included. “Seek And Destroy” has been supplemented with a separate recording. Starting with the whirlwind “Enter Sandman,” and proudly performing “Sad But True,” which would become a signature heavy metal song, there are only two new songs. The rest are a barrage of their traditional metallic numbers, giving you a taste of “the best of 1991” even more than “TORONTO 1991 1ST NIGHT.” Just 10 days after the release of their astronomical hit, this two-disc set allows you to experience the very starting point of the metal whirlwind that engulfed the world, with superb audience recordings and full video. The ensemble, unique to the early stages of the tour where weight and edge coexist, is imprinted on your brain with soundboard-quality, thick sound. This two-disc audience recording features a superb audio recording and full video of the “Budapest performance on August 22, 1991.” Recorded just 10 days after the release of the “Black Album” during the “Monsters of Rock” tour, it offers a powerful, soundboard-quality experience of the band’s early ensemble, where weight and metallic edge coexist.
