Marvin Gaye/Performance 1964-1981 Unreleased Documentary

This documentary includes footage not included in “The Real Thing: In Performance 1964-1981.” Smokey Robinson hosts the show, and rare footage of Marvin’s performances is woven in with interviews with Berry Gordy, Anna Gordy Gay (his first wife, who ended up in a messy divorce), Jean Gay (his second wife), Ashford Simpson, and others. The footage overlaps with some of the interview audio, but it is almost completely recorded, so don’t miss it. The recording of the guest performances, including the intimate “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” with Tammy Terrill in 1967, the medley of “I’ll Be Doggone/Money” with Tina Turner in 1965, and “I’ll Be Doggone” with Gladys Knight & the Pips in 1983, is wonderful. Also, the aforementioned Ashford Simpson couple reminiscing on their compositions with Marvin while playing “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “Your Precious Love,” and “You Are All I Need to Get By” will bring tears to your eyes. And the highlight of this video is the solo performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game, which is simply breathtaking. I recommend purchasing this DVDR just to see this legendary performance. If only it had Japanese subtitles.
