Description

A masterpiece of early MARILLION, a superb soundboard album with a fantastic lineup is now available. What is engraved on this work is “October 1, 1983 Kassel (West Germany) performance”. This is an FM sound source recorded with an official soundboard recording of a night during the debut work “SCRIPT FOR A JESTER’S TEAR”. Speaking of MARILLION, the official archive has progressed in recent years, and you can now listen to live performances from their debut era. However, this show is different from “RECITAL OF THE SCRIPT” and is not included in the box “EARLY STAGES”. Moreover, the person sitting on the stool is Jonathan Mover. It is a special show in which a technical drummer known for his work with various big names such as GTR, Mick Jagger, Aretha Franklin, Jan Hammer, Mike Oldfield, etc. participated. Jonathan officially only left his name in the songwriting credits of “Punch & Judy”, but he was an official member at the time. This week will be the early live album “BUFFALO 1983” in which former CAMEL Andy Ward participated, so let’s organize the situation by schedule. ・February 19th – March 9th: UK #1 (4 performances) [“SCRIPT FOR A JESTER’S TEAR” released on March 13th] ・March 15th – April 18th: UK #2 (29 performances) [Mick Pointer leaves → Andy Ward joins] ・May 12th – July 3rd: Europe #1 (7 performances) ・July 14th – August 8th: North America #1 (19 performances) ・August 25th + 27th: UK #3 (2 performances) / September 18th – 23rd: North America #2 (5 performances) [Andy leaves → Jonathan Mover joins] / October 1st: West Germany performance ←★This work★ [Jonathan leaves → Ian Mosley joins] October 27th-30th: UK #4 (4 performances) [Recording of “FUGAZI” begins in November] December 27th-31st: UK #5 (5 performances) This is the history of the tumultuous 1983. American Jonathan moved to London in September, immediately auditioned and joined MARILLION. After that, I performed the film in Kassel without any rehearsals, but within a month I had a conflict with Phish and quit. It is such an extremely rare show that can only be done once, but the contents are super exquisite, as if the rarity is a lie. It is definitely an FM album that also includes the opening scene of the program, but its quality is exactly the same as the official live album. Recording, mixing, stereo feeling, mastering…every point was checked and everything was perfect. It was probably not included in “EARLY STAGES” because Jonathan was participating, but it is a shame that only maniacs know about this record. Not only the sound but also the show is intense. The set includes all songs from “SCRIPT FOR A JESTER’S TEAR” except “The Web,” interspersed with single tracks “Three Boats Down From The Candy,” “Market Square Heroes,” and “Charting The Single.” Even more delicious is “Assassing,” which I couldn’t hear even in “RECITAL OF THE SCRIPT.” The number for the next work “FUGAZI”, which has not even started production, is already being shown. The performance of such a set is also amazing. Phish’s acting vocals are on full display, and there’s plenty of energy left to his youth. And the featured Jonathan is also wonderful. It is said that there was no rehearsal, let alone the premiere, but that anecdote is hard to believe. He can handle complex melodies with ease, and is tight yet technical. He sounds like an original member, and even the odd time signatures are in perfect sync with Pete Trewavas. After that, it’s no surprise that he was sought after by so many big names… To be honest, I’m shocked that he was such an amazing drummer. Of course, Steve Rosalie and Mark Kelly’s vivid and fantastic phrases dance wildly, giving you plenty of the flavor of early MARILLION. The preciousness of the members, the deliciousness of the set, the sound quality…all of which are the ultimate superlative soundboard album. It is a transcendent live album that stands proudly alongside the official works “RECITAL OF THE SCRIPT” and “EARLY STAGES”…no, it surpasses them. A must-listen and must-have for not only MARILLION fans but also everyone who loves British progressive rock.
