Description

The release of the super-excellent video of the phantom band is decided. The “phantom band” is MGM. The band is an acronym of the three former members of WHITESNAKE: Bernie Marsden, Mel Galley, and Neil Murray. After leaving WHITESNAKE, Bernie worked on various projects. ALASKA and BERNIE MARSDEN’S SOS, whose “LIVE IN LONDON 1986” was well received the other day. MGM is one of the bands formed during this movement. With the exception of ALASKA, who left two albums, they disbanded before getting on track, but among them, MGM got “a little closer”. They wrote new songs, performed live steadily, and even stood on the big stage. This work is the best video of the “READING FESTIVAL on August 29, 1987”. [Super rare “moving MGM”] This video is a superb audience… no, a professional shot? …I’m sorry for the vague description, but this is a video that is somewhere in between. It was definitely filmed by a staff member. He wasn’t in the audience, but standing on the right side of the stage, capturing the members from the side. Of course, there was no intention to hide anything, and even close-ups of their expressions are beautifully captured with a fiercely stable field of vision. It is a one-camera professional shot with only the sound of the microphone mounted on the camera to give it an audience-like feel. The quality of the footage is extremely rare. MGM is not a trio of Marsden, Galley, and Murray, but a five-piece band that includes John Saxon (vocals), who was discovered by the manager at the time, and John Marter (drums), who was also a member of early MARILLION. And their sound is clearly British blues rock that has a WHITESNAKE pedigree. This album contains only three songs: the new songs “Abuser” and “Palace Of The King,” and WHITESNAKE’s “Rough An’ Ready.” In fact, MGM also has the audience album “TEAM GAMBLER: VIENNA 1987”, but “Abuser” is a song that you can’t hear there either. All of them are blues rock that would become WHITESNAKE if David Coverdale sang them, and John Saxon, who has a bluesy voice, roars them powerfully…. It is a stage that can be said to be “a satellite of WHITESNAKE”. And the sight of the three former members lined up is the color of the white snake. Neil has also been with the two of them in the white snake, but “Bernie & Mel” is a view that only this work has. Mel shines with a groovy rhythm guitar, and Bernie exudes a blues color with a melodious solo. There is no way that these two people can be incompatible, and you can witness the unique taste of the British twin that never existed. [Two bonus-like superb videos] Although it is super rare and of the highest quality, it is lonely with only three songs. Therefore, two more precious videos of Bernie have been added to this work. First up is a professional shot from “Abbey Road Studios, June 16, 2000”. This is “Here I Go Again” from a benefit concert for Tony Ashton, who passed away in the late 1990s. On this day, they appeared as COMPANY OF SNAKES with Jon Lord, Ian Paice, and others, and this song was an encore, a duo of Jon Lord and Bernie Marsden. This is also a wonderful performance. Bernie’s calm and earnest singing voice is also rich, but even more than that, John’s organ is heartwarming. I think this was the only time John played this song live, but his free improvisational phrases shine. When we think of British rock improvisation, we tend to think of fierce battles, but this video is lyrical, gentle, and beautiful to the end. John was not an ordinary keyboard player, but had fingers that could spin infinite improvises. This is a song that will imprint that fact in your heart with moving phrases. Next is “Manchester, May 23, 2013”. This is an audience shot from when Bernie participated as a guest on the WHITESNAKE tour. You can witness “Fool For Your Loving” and “Here I Go Again”, two people who met with superb quality that is not inferior to the professional shots. In 1987, the MGM of the phantom twin Bernie & Mel was recorded, in 2000, the talent of the late John Lord evoked a quiet emotion, and in 2013, the originators of the masterpieces stood side by side for the first time in 32 years. Not only are they valuable, but they are also superb images. Live at Reading Festival, Reading, UK 29th August 1987 (40:40) 1. Abuser 2. Palace Of The King 3. Rough An’ Ready 4.
