Description

From the 1971 UK tour, a CD of the Ipswich performance on November 16th has been released! There are three types of mono audience recordings for this live performance, but this time, these three types of Aud sound sources were provided by multiple domestic and foreign ZEP collectors, and after careful selection and editing, it is a title that can be said to be the definitive Ipswich performance. No online sound sources are used. This live performance is a live performance that has been itemized since the late 1990s, about 20 years ago. To review the past records, first of all, the title using Source 1 was first released in the form of being incorporated into the nostalgic Antravata record “Two Penny Upright” (3CD). The contents of the Antravata record were the amount of 1CD, and it was far from the complete recording, but then TDOLZ released “IPSWICH 1971” (2CD) as a title using two types of sound sources. In this edition, Source 2 made its first appearance near “That’s The Way” from Heaven, and the second half of the live performance was also recorded up to the middle of “Full of Heart” with Source 1, but the title was far from precise editing. Then, “Over The Twelve Foot End” (2CD) appeared. This was the first title to record Source 2 alone, but the sound quality is still one step away. Also, since it was recorded with a single source, the missing parts were not filled in with Source 1, so the title is also one step away. Then, in 1999, EVSD released a title that edited Source 1 and Source 2 (two versions with two types of sources as the main ones), and in the same year, a title that mainly recorded the first appearance of Source 3, including the surprising first appearance song “Week End” and the final part of the live performance of “Gallows Pole”. After that, perhaps because the updated sound source of this live performance has not been released among net traders until recent years (strictly speaking, Source 1 is also available on the Internet, but it is difficult to obtain and the sound is not so good, so it is ignored here), and there have been almost no releases up to the present. Due to such circumstances, excluding reissues (Antraverta = Theremin), the number of releases is actually not that large. In addition, the two titles released in 1999 were not available because “Week End” and “Gallows Pole” were not distributed at the time of the first title’s release, and the second title had a problem with the sound source, Source 3, which was the main source, was originally slightly inferior in sound quality to Source 2 (slightly inferior in clarity, sound separation, and balance of each instrument). As a result, there was no title that could be called the definitive version, and if you ignore the fact that the item that took the best parts of the EVSD version was distributed after the release of the EVSD version, it became the best title, which was a very frustrating and annoying situation. I have roughly looked back at the flow of the titles of this performance, and this title released this time can be said to be a title that has been upgraded and updated for the first time in a long time. First of all, Source 2, which has the best sound quality of the three sources, is used as the main source that makes up the overall framework. Due to the historical background of the time, the EVSD discs and other records had a strong equalization process that raised and highlighted the high frequencies, which made the hissing noise quite noticeable, but this time, the processing was kept to a minimum, resulting in a wide-range, natural sound including the hissing. All songs were recorded with Source 1 and Source 3, and the live intro, the beginning of “Immigrant”, the middle of “Going To CA”, the beginning of “Tangerine”, the beginning of “What Is And”, the middle of “Mune Ippai” and after, which are missing from Source 2. The cut in the song “Gallows Pole” has no supplementary source, so it remains cut (※This is the only missing part this time). In addition, to mention the characteristics of each sound source, all three sources are mono audience recordings. Of these, Source 2 is the only source that contains “Heaven”, which is clear, fresh, and vivid. Source 1 is characterized by a texture that is slightly thicker and thicker than Source 2. Source 3 has a narrower range than Sources 1 and 2, but is better overall than Source 1 in terms of clarity. Source 3 feels a little farther away in terms of sound distance, but depending on where you listen, the evaluation may be reversed, so overall it is probably about the same. In addition, excessive equalization processing has been refrained from for Sources 1 and 3 used for compensation, so although it may seem small at first glance, you can feel that the depth and freshness of the sound is clearly better for Source 1 at the time of the live intro. As an aside, Source 1 and Source 2 are quite similar in recordings in places other than the freshness of the sound, but is it just my imagination? For example, the tape disturbance that occurs around 7 minutes into “Illusion” occurs at almost the same position in Sources 1 and 2 for some reason (there is a cut in Source 1 at this point. Coincidence?). Also, when trying to check the characteristic parts of Source 2 in Source 1, the corresponding parts are accidentally (?) missing in Source 1 and cannot be confirmed, etc. . . Of course, there are some voices of the audience that can only be heard in Source 2, so it is probably a different source, but some people may find it mysterious (as pointed out by the sound provider this time). Regarding editing, the main source 2, which has good sound quality, is edited in the direction of recording as long as possible. The return to the main source of the supplementary part is generally a few seconds to a few tenths of a second, except for some parts, but it is earlier (= the recording time of Source 2 is longer) than the already released EVSD board. In addition, the editing of the end of “Mune Ippai” (after the main Source 2 cut) is edited differently from the already released title, and all of the replacement point of the second part of the song, around 16 minutes 26 seconds on the CD time, was compensated for with Source 3 (comparing Source 1 and Source 3, Source 3 was judged to be better here). However, the last change part of Source 2 is recorded in Source 2 for about 5 seconds longer than the EVSD board (the first appearance part is 5 seconds as Source 2). For other detailed edits and comments, please refer to the track list below as it will be long. (Please note that the track list itself is difficult to see.) Live at St. Matthew’s Baths Hall, Ipswich, UK 16th November 1971 Disc 1 (65:44) 01. Introduction *The intro fades in but is longer than the previous one (4 seconds longer than the EV). In the previous version, there is a gap at the beginning where the applause calmed down. This title is uncut. 02. Immigrant Song intro slightly supplemented with source 1 03. Heartbreaker 04. Black Dog 05. Since I’ve Been Loving You 06. Rock And Roll 07. Stairway To Heaven 08. Going To California *Recorded in the first pseudo-finished version with source 3 supplemented around 1 minute 50 seconds 09. That’s The Way 10. Tangerine *The first 19 seconds are supplemented with source 1 Disc 2 (78:02) 01. MC 02. Dazed And Confused *After comparison and consideration, the minimum necessary supplement is made with source 3 around 7 minutes 20 seconds 03. What Is And What Should Never Be *From the applause after the illusion performance, the beginning of this track is supplemented with source 1 for about 11 seconds 04. Celebration Day *The sound fluctuation around 0 minutes 15 seconds is not supplemented to differentiate it from the previous release (no need to replace it in the first place) 05. Whole Lotta Love * The first part (around 11 minutes 24 seconds) is filled in with source 1 (source 3 is difficult to see the cheers here, and source 1 is judged to be appropriate considering the texture before and after the filling part), and from around 16 minutes 26 seconds at the end, source 3 is filled in. 06. Weekend * Recorded with source 3 07. Gallows Pole * Recorded with source 3. There is one cut as with the previous release. In the previous release, a different performance was filled in, but this time, for differentiation, it is left as it is. * The end part is a few tenths of a second longer than the previous release. The applause and cheers are cut out without fading and the end is finished.
