Description
From the fifth UK tour, which had a total of 16 performances from November 11 to December 15, 1971, the first day, the Newcastle performance on November 11, was recorded in a high-quality audience recording for 97 minutes. A fresh high-quality sound source uploaded with the recorder’s own comments. Perhaps because of this, the pitch is normal from the beginning, which is rare for this era. However, it seems that the sound was adjusted at the time of uploading, so the sound pressure was different depending on the part. According to the recorder’s explanation, it was recorded using three cassettes on the day, and this sound source was created mainly on the discovered PHILIPS C90. The second tape, which recorded a nearly 20-minute performance of Whole Lotta Love, was lost. (It was actually played after Celebration Day.) The newly discovered third tape contains Communication Breakdown, which allows you to listen to the last part of the show. In any case, as “Presence” states that “this upload version is the best for Newcastle in 1971,” you can enjoy the show with one of the best sound quality of this era. What is particularly noteworthy is the stability and closeness of the sound. There is almost no muffling, and the sound separation, clarity, and punch are all at the highest level. This is a gem that I would like to see released as a press CD in the near future, with the fine analog noise mitigated and adjusted. Two months after the legendary first visit to Japan in 1971, the main points of the set are reminiscent of that, and the members’ youthful playing is also perfect. Since it is the first day of the tour, there are some parts that are a little out of sync, but the live performance at this time, which is pushed through with momentum and youth, is a great listen. Plant is in top form, so he is also challenging himself to boldly break the melody, and since I’ve been loving you is amazing. In the first minute of Black Dog, he breaks it too much and confuses the drums for a moment. Moby Dick is not played, and the show scale gives a slightly compact impression, but it is a great recording that you can enjoy from start to finish with a stable sound and a tight performance.
