Description

Newcastle in 1971, when the “ticket jacket” items were unusually popular. Newcastle has finally been released on CD. Our shop has released the sound source of the winter 1971 UK tour without excessive gimmicks, and has thrown a stone into the situation of this tour, where there were few items that could be easily listened to. Until now, the image of the 1971 UK was strong that it was a weak impression after the stormy Japanese performance, but if you listen to the items that have been released in this way, you will understand that even without the enthusiastic excitement like in Japan, they were relaxing in their home country of England, but still playing a hot performance unique to 1971. Moreover, Newcastle is the first day of such a UK tour. In the UK in the winter of 1971, there were scenes where Plant’s voice was painful depending on the day, especially the opening “Immigrant Song”, but this day was the first day of the tour, and the engine was at full throttle with no hoarse voice at all. If the audience’s reaction had been more enthusiastic, it might have been misunderstood as a Japanese performance. On the other hand, it is also typical of ZEP to see some stumbling scenes that seem to be the first day of the tour, and it is interesting that Bonzo seems to make a mistake in “Black Dog” at a point like “Eh, there?”. And yet the footwork is light to the last, and Plant’s scream is brilliant. The amazing thing about ZEP in 1971 is that they can easily perform astonishing power plays. This day can’t be bad either. Also, it is interesting that “Rock And Roll” is played as a normal repertoire in the first half of the live until the Electric Magic Show at the Wembley Empire Pool on this tour. It is a song that anyone who likes Western music and can play instruments has probably done once if they formed a band. However, at the time of Newcastle, this song was a “new song” that had only been released three days before, and was unfamiliar to the audience. As if to show that, Plant introduced the song “Rock And Roll” before starting, which was very refreshing. Since the 1972 Japan performance, this song has gained a firm position as the opening number, and since 1977 it has been promoted to an encore. It has become a standard that has nothing to do with the act of introducing songs. That’s why this scene is really fresh. In addition, Plant is in top form, so it is reliable that he can easily sing the same melody as the album version. This is also where you can feel the special part of the 1971 UK. Even “That’s The Way”, which is a pity that the ending is not recorded, is overwhelmed by Plant’s young and glossy voice. The atmosphere of the winter in England has been misunderstood as “a performance that loses tension” because it is completely different from the Japanese performance, but that is not the case at all. “Celebration Day” at the end of the live performance also has a tremendous groove. In any case, the intensity created by the light footwork performance is overwhelming. As is well known to enthusiasts, the Newcastle sound source was recorded by Taper using three cassettes to record the entire show, but over time the second tape that captured “Whole Lotta Love” was lost. It is unfortunate that the second half of the live performance was in a “missing” state, but it is still a good sound source with very easy-to-listen-to sound quality and ZEP’s hot performance that fully compensates for it. Although it is not a sound image that can be described as “like a sound board”, it is still a wonderful and easy-to-listen-to sound quality that is in the top three of the tour, and a wonderful balance that captures the realism of the UK tour. In addition, there is almost no pitch deviation. For this CD release, only some noise was removed from the transfer, which is considered to be the best, and it was once again proven to be such a good sound source.
