Description

The ZEP 1972 winter UK tour was a hot topic when the first day of Glasgow was discovered two years ago, but this time another sound source of the second day of Glasgow was discovered. There has been an audience recording of this day for a long time, and there are probably some enthusiasts who remember it from TDOLZ’s “STUCK ON YOU”. However, those who remember it are only “maniacs”, and there are probably an overwhelming number of people who have never heard of it. After all, the sound quality of the existing sound source (hereinafter referred to as “recorder 1”) was extremely poor. Although monaural audience recording is fine, the sound is distant and the overall sound is severely distorted. It was a sound source that could only be heard by enthusiasts, and even enthusiasts would have difficulty listening to it. However, recently, another audience recording of the second day has appeared. It was the same when the first day was discovered, but it was really surprising that such a sound source appeared now. Moreover, this time’s sound source is still a monaural recording, and although it cannot be said to be at an excellent level, it is incomparably easier to listen to than that “recorder 1”. In that sense, this excavation will excite enthusiasts all over the world. Although it is a sound image with a sense of distance, it is surprising that there is no distortion of the distorted sound like “Recorder 1”, and it is so fresh that it is hard to believe that it has been dormant for almost 50 years. However, this time’s sound source (hereinafter referred to as “recorder 2”) had a different kind of problem than “recorder 1”. This means that small cuts occur frequently during performances. This cannot be released in its current state. “Recorder 1” has been in the spotlight for the first time in a while. It is said that the cuts can be made up for by using these as supplementary personnel. However, this is a different sound source that appeared for the first time, and it would be a mistake to see other items with such processing appear. In this regard, this title takes a new approach to restoring the sound source by delving into the problems of this time’s “Recorder 2”. “Recorder 2” not only has cuts, but there are also parts where it was recorded that seem to have deteriorated over the course of 50 years. Normally, this part would be cut out and filled in with “Recorder 1”, but in terms of sound quality, “Recorder 2” wins by a landslide. Therefore, for areas where there were sound quality problems due to tape deterioration even though it was recorded, we mixed the two sound sources. This is called “reinforcement” rather than “compensation.” For example, “Dancing Days” introduces reinforcement for the first time around the 2 minute mark, but this makes it possible to hear the performance without being buried in the rough sound quality of “Recorder 1”. In “Dazed And Confused”, which has a long performance, both cuts and deterioration occur frequently, and both “compensation” and “reinforcement” processing will be utilized to the maximum. The very precise editing alone should make you understand the significance of this release. Also, although it does not have the extreme roughness that “Recorder 1” has, there were still some areas where I noticed the distortion that is common in vintage audiences, so I applied equalization to suppress the low range, which is the cause of this. , I think another advantage is that the contours of the performance are clearer. And what stands out about this sound source, which is much more audible than “Recorder 1”, is Plant’s singing voice, which is even better than the previous day. In the first place, the quality of her voice maintains the luster and firmness that would be completely lost when she gets a cold a month later, making me keenly aware that she is truly in the final stages of her 1972 mode. He can “sing” everywhere, and the improvement in sound quality makes that sense of attack stand out. The plant that accompanies the strong playing of the other three who opened their eyes to the tactics of rhythmic improvisation from this tour…it’s worth listening to as a new document of that finite period. For example, the new song at the time, “The Song Remains the Same,” was sung with a melody close to the album version, which really looked great on stage. In the first half of the concert, even during the MC, he got angry at the noisy audience and yelled, “You’re so loud! Just listen to me!” and ended up being featured in the British music magazine Melody Maker in front of “Stairway to Heaven.” In response to the review by Chris Charlesworth, who wrote, “Thank you for saying that Zeppelin is on the decline!” He even criticized the journalist. Even such irritation can only be seen as a positive effect on Plant’s voice today. After all, even “Dazed And Confused”, which is a fun song at this time of year, is interesting because Plant’s presence stands out even more than the interplay between the three. His singing voice was wonderful from the beginning, and I understood for the first time in this sound source that the so-called San Francisco section was singing Neil Young’s “Cowgirl In The Sand” following the previous day. It was extremely difficult to hear the details of this part with “Recorder 1”. “Stairway to Heaven” also reveals his anger as mentioned earlier, but it’s interesting to see Page’s guitar solo repeating phrases that use a lot of hammering, as if he were expressing Plant’s frustration with phrases. It’s like I’ve shown you. The “Whole Lotta Love” medley is where Plant, who was aggressive from beginning to end, shows off an explosive performance that is suitable for the finale. Up to “Let’s Have A Party”, it is a development that can be called the standard of this period, but after that, Plant started singing Elvis Presley’s “Stuck On You”. Yes, this is the cover that became the title of the ancient TDOLZ edition, but it was hard to hear that the highlight of the day was also “recorder 1.” However, with this sound source that is much easier to listen to, I realize that it was a song selection that could have been sung because of the aggressive plant of the day. The true essence of ZEP is that he leads the band and the other three respond to him. Until now, the second day of Glasgow was a completely hardcore mania-only sound source, but this time it has been elevated to a masterpiece document that can be enjoyed by maniacs even if it is not core. However, the valuable but problematic sound source has been meticulously restored, so you can finally listen to it. And above all, the expression of the performance is different from the previous day in many places, so you can finally enjoy listening and comparing it with “GLASGOW 1972 1ST NIGHT” released last year. After all, playing this time of year is special! Green’s Playhouse, Glasgow, Scotland 4th December 1972 Green’s Playhouse, Glasgow, Scotland 4th December 1972 ★Newly excavated Rec 2 is mainly used, and the missing parts are filled in with Rec 1. ★The sound quality is still overwhelmingly better than the previous one, but it was too loud, so I cut down the bass, but it still gives a loud impression. ★The tape is in poor condition and has multiple points of deterioration, and although the tape is still running, it has deteriorated in a saw-like manner. ★I made it as easy to listen to as possible by overlaying the previously released parts of the song with severe deterioration. *Reinforcement = Place where previously released parts were covered / Compensation = Places filled in due to missing parts *The sound quality of previously released parts is poor, so replacing them will result in a big difference in texture, so it’s a last resort. *Previously released parts/reinforcements are equalized in a timely manner depending on the situation. . ★Places with short deterioration have not been corrected.
