Description
It seems that the main part of the long-running mirrored master release has been unearthed (of course, there are some great recordings that make you wonder “Is that still not there?”), and according to JEMS, the mirrored master of Led Zeppelin’s LA Forum on June 23, 1977 has been released as a sound source that is suitable for putting a period on hold. However, on the weekend of writing this, the surprising Guns 1989 recording was released in a different venue. It seems that it will continue for a while. Going back to the topic, this 1977 LA Forum was, of course, the day of “Badge Holders”. With last year’s big excavation and the ultimate best-seller “FOR BADGE HOLDERS ONLY: JON WIZARDO MASTER CASSETTES: COMPLETE EDITION”, it has become easy to enjoy LP masters, but the mirrored version shows off the overwhelming high sound quality at a level comparable to that. It is unfortunate that Millard failed to record the beginning of the live performance on this day only, and the recording started with “Since I’ve Been Loving You”. Furthermore, once the recording started, there were frequent skips between the song and “No Quarter”, which can be said to be a chronic problem of this recording, and this has not changed since the release of “LOS ANGELES 1977 3RD NIGHT” in 2015. The most fatal thing is the loss of the beginning of the live performance, but JEMS unearthed a unique recording by Barry Goldstein, who was also Millard’s friend, in this regard. On June 23, 1977, the Wizard recording and the Millard recording stood out in terms of quality, including the stereo recording, and the other recordings that had been circulating until now had a disappointingly poor sound quality compared to those, and were merely a filler. There was the newly excavated Goldstein recording, which was easy to listen to incomparably among the mono audience on this day. As a result, JEMS was able to put together the entire live performance with Millard-related sound sources for this release. In addition, the recording by his friend Goldstein only lasted for the first 45 minutes of the live performance, so this release is literally a mix of the best of both worlds. The problem of skipping sound that can be heard from the problematic “Since I’ve Been Loving You” onwards was mainly solved by patching the Wizard sound source for this release. The problem that was left as it was in the 2015 release has been solved this time, and the release is now in a calmer and more enjoyable state than ever before. As usual, JEMS has prepared two versions for us, a flat transfer and a “dadgad” remaster, but the remaster version has been given the honor of being released as the limited press CD this week. “dadgad” has already achieved great results in Goldstein’s shocking excavation “L.A. FORUM 1977 2ND NIGHT: BARRY GOLDSTEIN MASTER TAPES”, and this time it is once again a magnificent finish. First of all, as with “L.A. FORUM 1977 2ND NIGHT”, the dark sound quality that monaural audiences tend to fall into has been improved, and the view has been improved to reduce the difference with the mirrored recording. As expected, “dadgad” and the Goldstein recording are a great match. And when the master of the mirrored recording was excavated this time, the reality that the cassette showed signs of deterioration was revealed. This was particularly noticeable after “Stairway to Heaven”, and the sound became muffled due to the deterioration. “dadgad” has also dealt with this problem brilliantly, making it much easier to listen to than the original state. In fact, this is the biggest reason why the “dadgad” version was adopted for the press CD this time, and I think you can understand it at a glance. Even outside of these rest apartments, the results of the “dadgad” remaster are truly wonderful. Originally, this recording captured Jimmy’s guitar in a powerful sound image, even among the Miller series of 1977 LA Forum, and the skill of “dadgad” makes it sound even more vivid. Thanks to this, you can feel that “Ten Years Gone” became one of the best live versions in 1977, and “No Quarter” is also a masterpiece among masterpieces, and Jimmy’s brilliant playing that rivals the rhythm section feels even more real thanks to the “dadgad” remaster. In this way, the release was made using the “dadgad” remaster this time, and the overall finish is indeed as expected. Above all, another great recording of the legendary “Badge Holder” day is finally released in the best form.
