Description
One of the PA out soundboards produced by the second leg of the ZEP 1973 US tour, Buffalo on July 15th. Due to the nature of the sound source, several items have been produced so far, but since the 21st century, even audience recordings have been unearthed. The nostalgic “SLOWING DOWN IN BUFFALO” by The Chronicles Of Led Zeppelin was compiled as if to sample both of those sound sources. Regarding this day, Winston Remaster later released a version that seemed to take the best of the two sound sources, and this “SLOWING DOWN IN BUFFALO” based on that is now the most popular Buffalo 73 item. However, the Winston version itself was made almost 10 years ago, and it is true that enthusiasts have been waiting for the appearance of new items and upgraded versions. The soundboard part of the Winston version was based on a copy of the 3rd generation, and there was clearly room for perfection. In the midst of all this, the familiar The Dogs of Doom team finally unearthed the low-generation version of this performance. They have basically been unearthing live ZEP sound sources one after another, whose existence has not been confirmed until now, and have delighted enthusiasts all over the world, but they have even unearthed an upper version of a sound source that could be called a major sound board like this one. Once again, their high ability to collect sound sources is made clear. In addition, what they unearthed this time was the 1st generation, literally a low generation. That is why the upper feeling of the sound quality is obvious, and the SBD part is clearly improved over the past items released under the name of “SLOWING DOWN IN BUFFALO”. The natural sound spread and clarity are obvious at a glance. The rich natural feeling unique to the first generation is clear. The upper feeling is great enough to make past items unnecessary just by this alone. Compared to this version, the previous version has a narrower range, and when it comes to Winston Remaster, the hard equalization of the time is not a little noticeable. You will definitely be surprised that the original sound source had such a natural and rich sound quality, and you will be able to feel the power of the first generation. It is well known to enthusiasts that there is a cut at the beginning of “The Rain Song” in this SBD, but the method of compensating for this loss with audience recording has already been established in the Winston version. However, the audience recording on this day, especially around the same song, had unstable tape rotation, and simply compensating for it would have made it very difficult to hear. In fact, the Winston version sounded like the Mellotron was twisted. This version has been corrected with the latest technology and aud compensation has been performed, which is also much easier to hear than the previous version. In addition, the SBD version ended recording up to “Stairway To Heaven”, and from then on we had no choice but to rely on audience recording. However, as was made clear by the TCOLZ version, the sound quality of the audience recording is not so good. If it was just mono, the sound was far away and distorted. While such an aud part was labeled 2nd gen. in the Winston version, the one used this time was “unknown gene”. However, this is also in better condition than the previous version, and it is tearful that it has been equalized to reduce the roughness. After all, the sound quality of the SBD part has improved dramatically, so even after the equalization this time, the sound quality still falls behind, but it is now in a state where you can listen to it calmly, even if it is rough. The improvement in sound quality of the SBD part this time is so remarkable that it makes you feel this difference with “Stairway To Heaven”. The sound quality is much more transparent than the previous version, so much so that you can’t help but be captivated by it. On this day, Robert’s voice starts off in a fuzzy tone, which is a symptom unique to the second leg, but he also improves his condition from “Over The Hills And Far Away” at once. Thanks to this, the ending of this song and “The Rain Song” are more passionate than usual. The performance of “Stairway To~” is also wonderful, and the guitar solo that Jimmy passionately showed stands out even more in this upper version. Also, in the second leg, the members must have gotten used to the stage setting in the stadium, and the thrilling exchange reminiscent of Europe a few months ago was revived in “Dazed And Confused”. There were great developments in Detroit and Seattle before and after, but this day was even more intense. Even in the middle of the “San Francisco” part, you can see a different rhythm than usual, and the bargaining between Jimmy and Bonzo, as if Robert’s roar was a signal around 20 minutes, is exquisite. As a result, it was one of the longest performances of “Dazed And~” during this period, but it is a great performance that will not tire the listener. The second leg was a turbulent development, with forced shows such as Vancouver, which was canceled due to Robert’s poor condition, and Boston, which was shortened because the audience was too noisy, waiting for the forced termination show, but it made me realize how wonderful the performance was here in Buffalo before that. This is an undisputed upper version of Buffalo, one of the standard in 73 soundboards! (Remaster note) The SBD sound source was 20 to 30% slower by a semitone, so I corrected it. Aud was correct. Since the sound pressure was low, I raised it to the limit where the waveform does not collapse. I decided that the evaluation would not change even if I equalized and changed the sound of Disc 3 (aud), so I respected the original sound. The Aud patch part of The Rain Song had a step in the pitch, so I corrected it, but the sound of Aud has tape vibration, so it was fine-tuned, but the nausea at the beginning was reduced.
