Description
The unstoppable excavation of the “Dogs of Doom” sound source has arrived in December. This time, a new audience recording of Madison Square Garden on June 8th from the 1977 tour has been excavated. Speaking of MSG June 8th, there were two types of sound sources: “recorder 1” which was included in the nostalgic “SECOND NIGHT IN THE GARDEN”, and “recorder 2” which has not yet been released due to multiple cuts and noisy surroundings, but the newly excavated “recorder 3”. The sound is closer than “recorder 1” where the sound was far away and the contour was like a dumpling, and there is no problem like “recorder 2” where there was distortion in addition to the cuts. At the moment, it can be called the most easy-to-listen-to audience recording of MSG June 8th. This version was restored by dadgad. Even so, it is undeniable that the sound image is still far away, and even if it is easier to hear than the previous sound source, it is still difficult to release it. It would have been nice if it had an upper feel like the popular “PONTIAC 1977: UPGRADE” from 1977, which was also excavated by “Dogs of Doom”, but MSG June 8th, which cannot escape the field of maniacs, has become a mania-oriented sound source again. In addition, it is dadgad who is not very thorough (bitter smile). Although he said that he restored “Dogs of Doom”, in fact there was a problem that was left unattended. That is the rise in pitch seen up to “No Quarter”. I don’t mean to say it, but it is quite stressful to listen to a B-class sound source like this one with the pitch still out of sync. Still, this part is well adjusted. There is no room for error. Although the sound is far away in this way, the recording condition is difficult to do anything about, but the heat of the performance is still transmitted well. Bonzo was in top form throughout the whole album, and in the opening song “The Song Remains The Same” you can hear the crisp drumming that foreshadows “Eddie”, and it is clear that the band had reached the next level just before the peak of the 1977 tour. Robert was also very excited throughout the whole album, and it was clear that he was truly enjoying the stage at the arenas that ZEP loved to play at, such as the LA Forum in the west and MSG in the east. And because there is a sense of distance in the sound image, the roughness of Jimmy’s playing is ironically masked (especially “Ten Years Gone” lol), but still, the part where his phrase burns in the guitar solo of “Stairway To Heaven” sounds quite clear, which is nice. In that case, I can’t help but think that I would like to listen to it on a soundboard on a day like this, but although it is a B-class quality audience that is often seen in 1977 MSG, the performance is first-class. (Remastering memo) The cut point from the opening to No Quarter (side A of the 120-minute tape) was just under 30% semitones higher, so this has been corrected.
