Description

This work is the first complete recording of the second day of the MSG consecutive performances, which had only poor sound quality until now, with a high-quality source. Zeppelin had been touring every year since their debut, but in 1974, Plant took a break due to throat surgery, and in 1976, Plant broke a bone in a car accident, so there was no tour. Therefore, the 1977 tour, which was the first in two years, was a major event that marked Zeppelin’s revival, and as a result, this was Zeppelin’s last tour in the United States. For American fans who had highly praised Zeppelin before their home country of the UK, this tour was the last chance to see them. The 1977 North American tour was a long one, divided into three parts, with two rest periods in between, in April, May, June, and July. However, during the third leg of the tour in July, Plant’s son died of illness, and the tour was interrupted after only four performances, and the band went on an indefinite hiatus. Therefore, the schedule was reduced from the original plan, and the tour was completed after 44 shows out of the 51 scheduled. However, despite such troubles, it seems that the US tour was enthusiastically received by the fans as it was the first US tour in a long time and the largest tour ever for Zeppelin. This tour was a tour to accompany the hard and hard album “Presence”, and since the songs from the album were being performed for the first time, rehearsals for the tour were carried out thoroughly for two months from the beginning of the year. Then, on April 1, 1977, the tour finally kicked off in Dallas. [6 consecutive performances at Madison Square Garden] The 1977 US tour is famous for the consecutive performances in Los Angeles, but six consecutive performances were also held at Madison Square Garden. Zeppelin also held a large-scale consecutive performance at MSG, where the eternal poem was once filmed in New York, the largest city in the world. The schedule was as follows: [MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1977] June 7, 1977 June 8, 1977 “BEHIND THE STACKS” (this work) June 10, 1977 “RELIC FROM A DIFFERENT AGE” June 11, 1977 “ABSENCE” June 13, 1977 “GLINPSE AN AXE” June 14, 1977 [About sound quality and content] As I wrote at the beginning, the second day of MSG only had extremely poor sound quality, and it was a day that was long looked down upon by Zeppelin enthusiasts as a problem before the evaluation of the concert content. However, the source recorded in this work, which was excavated at the end of 2021, is one of the best high-quality audience sound sources compared to the conventional ones, as well as other performances in 1977, and the concert itself will be reevaluated by this work. It is fortunate that we can listen to such a sound source 40 years after the concert. The closeness of the sound, the clear and wide sound quality are the best among the 1977 sound sources, and the content is also perfect. The phase, which was slightly left, has also been corrected. [Perfect pitch adjustment] Of course, the 1977 recording was on cassette tape. Since it is not digital equipment like today, pitch adjustment is a very important point in tape media, where physical changes over time are inevitable. The original tape of this work is no exception, and the pitch was in a shaky state when played normally after more than 40 years of aging. It is not a matter of how many percent overall, but the pitch differs depending on the location on the tape, which is the fate of old tapes. This work carefully corrects it and takes time to perform perfect pitch adjustment that could not be done with many existing boards. The concert on June 8, 1977, the second day of the six consecutive performances at Madison Square Garden, is completely recorded with a high-quality source that has never appeared before. The pitch adjustment is perfect. It will be the best title in terms of both content and sound quality, with a sense of realism that will bring the listener back to New York MSG 40 years ago.
