Description
Jimmy Page looked back on LED ZEPPELIN in 1972 as “the best condition,” and produced “HOW THE WEST WAS WON.” A rare video collection that allows you to witness that performance has been decided to be released. This work contains four performances, including Japan: “February 25: Oakland,” “June 11: Baltimore,” “June 22: San Bernardino,” and “October 2: Nippon Budokan.” This is the 8mm film. It’s a good opportunity to check what position each show was in by looking at the overview of their activities in 1972.・February 16-29: Oceania (6 performances) ←★1 performance: about 5 minutes★・May 27 + 28: Europe #1 (2 performances)・June 6-28: North America (17 performances) ←★2 performances: about 10 minutes★・October 2-10: Japan (6 performances) ←★1 performance: about 4 minutes★・October 27-November 23: Europe #2 (15 performances)February 25: Auckland performance (about 5 minutes)The first one to appear is an 8mm film shot in New Zealand. It was an 8mm film unearthed in 2019, and a version with synchronized sound was released last year. This is already so cool. If you have noticed this article, you may know that 8mm film from the 1970s was about 10 to 10 seconds long. Therefore, it is common to shoot various parts of the show at random, and it is not common to be able to say the angle or position in general. However, this video is super close-up all the time. It’s like a collection of super close-up angles of professional shots, and Robert Plant’s expression and Page’s hands are so close that they stick out from the screen. Not only the front two, but even Bonzo’s drum solo is a close-up of his face. The power of this work is outstanding. This work is recorded in chronological order, but it is a masterpiece video that is suitable for decorating the beginning. June 11: Baltimore performance (about 6 and a half minutes) The second Baltimore video is a recently unearthed 8mm video. At first, it is captured in full view from the stand seats on the left side of the stage, but from the second half of “Since I’ve Been Loving You”, it moves to the very side of the stage and is shot. In the last “Stairway To Heaven”, it transforms into a super close-up that is comparable to the opening of the Oakland performance. What’s more, the wonderfulness of this video is its color. The film was stored in very good condition, so there is no fading at all, and the vividness of the time itself is sore to the eye. This is the most beautiful and longest masterpiece in this work. June 22: San Bernardino performance (about 3 and a half minutes) This may be familiar to enthusiastic collectors. The San Bernardino performance is an 8mm film taken a few days before “HOW THE WEST WAS WON”. It captures a half-body close-up of Paige and Plant from the front of the stage, and although it is not a close-up, it is not far away. It is a video with a series of very “picture-worthy” angles. To be honest, compared to the two videos above, the focus is soft and the color is reddish, but it is the best in this work in terms of “coolness”. October 2: Nippon Budokan performance (about 4 minutes) The last to appear is the Nippon Budokan. The shock of appearing is also a nostalgic video. Although it is the poorest in this work in terms of quality, it is a trivial matter in front of the weight of “Budokan video”. Nothing beats the thrill of seeing the live performances that have been ingrained in your mind from countless records come to life right before your eyes. This is a collection of footage that transcends 50 years of time and space, from the powerful Oakland performances to the legendary Nippon Budokan, showing the amazing “scenes of 1972”.
