Description

ZEP’s 1970 Hawaii performance was unearthed in the mid-1990s, and many items have been released, starting with the nostalgic gold jacket “THE BOX OF TRICKS”. Not only was it a good first appearance sound source, but it was also a sound source that could be listened to compactly and crisply on one sheet, even at the peak of the autumn of 1970, and many items were produced. Above all, the sound quality is good. The sound image that does not fall flat despite being a mono audience and the good balance of the entire recording are also factors that produce many items. When the sound source was still on the market, it was an era when sound sources were spread by cassette copies, so at the time of release, there were more or less gene drops and unnecessary cuts. However, as the 21st century arrived, the sound quality and the condition of the sound source improved, and further items continued to be released, which shows the appeal of this sound source. However, it is true that in past items, the pitch deviation was not fully addressed, or the cuts that occurred in “Moby Dick” were overlooked, and in addition, the cuts were covered up by pinching them. While there were many items for the reasons mentioned above, the dilemma of Hawaii in 1970 was that no definitive version was born that said “This is it!”. Therefore, this time, the release was realized by thoroughly reviewing the Hawaii sound source that had been somewhat sloppy until now. First of all, the version adopted for this limited CD release is the 1st Gen version that is circulating among enthusiasts. This alone is enough to guarantee a release that will surpass past items. As a result of thorough overhaul technology, including mono conversion, the pitch and sound quality have been improved to an easy-to-understand and best state. As mentioned earlier, this audience recording is mono, but even when listening with headphones, the state that does not feel flat is further accentuated by this adjustment. And “Moby Dick”, which had some cuts in past items. On the other hand, the 1st Gen had the minimum number of cuts, but a different cut from the past items occurred after 10 minutes. By patching it from “HOLIDAY IN WAIKIKI”, the full-length uncut version was finally recorded. Two performances were held on this day, and this recording recorded the first show (the second show has not yet been excavated), but it is said that the next show was scheduled and the short set was performed due to equipment troubles. Still, it is typical of ZEP in 1970 that the performance itself has no sense of rest. On the contrary, it is rare that “Heartbreaker” starts with Jimmy’s pretentious intro like the live version in the first half of the year, even in the same 1970, and the screaming of Plant explodes in the following “Since I’ve Been Loving You”. Even with the next round in sight, it is typical of ZEP in 1970 that they can still play such high-tension performances with ease. And after all, the next performance after “Blueberry Hill” is this Hawaii performance. The “Whole Lotta Love” medley is also excellent, as if it condenses the tension of that time, and “Some Other Guy” appears just like that time. It has the heat unique to the fall of 1970, but it is also a rare and easy-to-listen-to 1970 ZEP sound source that can be listened to quickly on one CD. In addition, the sound quality is very easy to listen to. The best version of the long-established 1970 Hawaii performance is finally completed!
