Description
Led Zeppelin debuted in 1968, but when they first formed, Jimmy Page was unsure whether to take the band in an acoustic or hard rock direction. In the end, he chose hard rock, probably because of Bonzo’s presence. Bonzo’s drumming was so unique that it set him apart from other drummers. In the same way that Jimi Hendrix did not permit any similar presence before or after him, Bonzo can also be said to be a Jimi Hendrix on drums. John Paul Jones said of his impressions of the first session the four of them had together in a small studio: “When I heard John Bonham play, I was convinced that this band was going to be great.” It can be said that Bonzo’s presence had a great influence on Zeppelin’s musicality. Zeppelin, which rushed through the 1970s, was a symbol of the “decade” that shaped the era. However, unlike playing an instrument, Plant had to demonstrate his own voice, and his throat was overused from the early days of the band, and after the band’s tour in 1973, he underwent surgery to repair the damaged throat. Therefore, the tour that had been held every year since their debut was not held only in 1974. After recovering from the surgery, he embarked on another large-scale US tour in 1975, including a series of performances at the legendary Earl’s Court in London. Zeppelin started up again after a one-year hiatus. However, the misfortunes that befell the band one after another greatly restricted their activities after this. First, in 1975, Plant broke both of his legs in a car accident, canceling his tour and refocusing his efforts on medical treatment. Therefore, following 1974, there was no tour in 1976. “Presence” was recorded during this time, and Plant reportedly sang it while sitting in a wheelchair. In 1977, the band started up again. Plant changed his singing style and, with the help of equipment, embarked on his biggest ever U.S. tour with the great Led Zeppelin again. This 1977 tour was full of great performances, and combined with the perfection of their new album “Presence” at the time, it was a very popular tour among fans. In particular, the consecutive performances at MSG and LA are regarded as important concerts in Zeppelin history. However, in the latter half of the tour, misfortune struck when Plant’s eldest son, Karak, died of a viral infection. With Plant shocked by his son’s death, the band is forced to suspend activities indefinitely. Since their debut, Led Zeppelin has been on a variety of large-scale tours, both large and small, but following in 1974 and 1976, they were unable to conduct any tours in 1978. After that, in 1979, they performed at Knebworth Festival for two performances, and as a warm-up gig, they performed two performances in Copenhagen, making a total of four performances in that year, but the band was far from the band up to that point and was lackluster. I can’t deny the feeling that it was something special. This may be due to the band’s blank state and the state of the plant, but the biggest reason is probably that Zeppelin’s musicality was a little out of tune with the times. In the late 1970s, punk was at its peak. Punk, which sings radical anti-establishment lyrics in a simple, childish yet aggressive performance style, is widely accepted by young people as a total way of life, not only in music but also in fashion, with bands such as Led Zeppelin They were seen as ancient beings, like dinosaurs that had become too large to move. Times were changing rapidly, and the time had come for Zeppelin to be aware of this. Recording for the album In Through the Outdoors began in November 1978 and was released the following year in 1979. Up until then, Jimmy Page had always been in charge of the band, but this album seems to have handed over that control to John Paul Jones, and his colors are strongly reflected in it. are. In contrast to his previous album “Presence”, which was a keyboard-less album, this album brings the keyboard to the forefront, and he is credited with composing more songs than Jimmy. Along with the release of this album, a European tour was announced in 1980. Their first tour in three years, titled TOUR OVER EUROPE, was a small tour with 14 performances, probably serving as a preview for the U.S. tour scheduled later, and the media was harsh on the tour in the UK. It was announced that the tour would be touring around Europe, focusing on West Germany, avoiding the United States. [1980 TOUR OVER EUROPE] The 1980 European tour was a tour shrouded in mystery in real time, unlike today when soundboard sound sources are so widely distributed. The stage you can see in the photo is John Paul Jones in a casual style, wearing jeans and a T-shirt, with his hair cut short, and he is clearing away the atmosphere of the 70’s and giving a strong look into the 80’s. It has become a conscious thing. And on stage, surprisingly, Jimmy Page was speaking as MC, a sight that had never been seen before. Zeppelin may have been searching for a new era of style. However, on the other hand, the band’s pandering attitude of conforming to the times rather than creating them also foreshadowed the band’s becoming more conservative and ending. The concert surprisingly opens with Yardbirds’ “Train Kept A Rollin’”, which is the same as in 1969. This may have been an expression of his desire to return to his roots after opening a long blank. There are only three songs from the new album “In Through the Outdoors”: “In The Evening,” “Hot Dog,” and “All My Love,” and the rest are all replays of past songs. It also has a compact overall structure, with the show lasting about two hours in total. The long songs such as “Dazzled”, “No Quarter”, and “Moby Dick” are all omitted, making it a very simple stage. The main part of the concert is the same for each performance, but the encore set list changes almost daily. [June 18, 1980 COLOGNE performance] A concert in Cologne, Germany, where the cathedral is located. This will be the second day of the tour after Dortmund. The encore of the day was “Communication Breakdown”. Although it is a performance with few previously released records, it is an excellent title recorded on a high-quality sound board. This sound board is perfect in terms of sound quality, but there are cuts in three songs. The first is about 30 seconds of the ending of “THE RAIN SONG”, and about 2 minutes of each of “ACHILLES LAST STAND” and “STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN”. In this work, the concert is completely recorded by supplementing them with audience sound sources that appear for the first time. The most important audience sound source is the 1980s, so it’s very good, and it’s comparable to the main sound board sound source, and it has a high sound quality that makes you think it’s better. It is something. I’m surprised that there isn’t much discomfort when I listen to the edited parts. Also, the pitch adjustment is perfectly matched. The soundboard sound source used as the main part of this work is said to be first generation, but there is a change in pitch at a halfway point such as immediately after the song starts, which is probably the marking when dropping it from the master. Ta. The previously released version had only rough pitch adjustments that were not done as strictly, but the appeal point of this work is that the pitch has been finely corrected and has become zero. And as a bonus track, the three aforementioned songs that needed to be supplemented with audience sound sources are recorded with audience sound sources. The main part was mainly composed of soundboards to supplement it, but with the intention of recording without cuts during the songs, audience sound sources of three songs are included here as uncut versions. [TOUR OVER COLOGNE 1980] This work records the Cologne performance on June 18, 1980, the second day of the tour, on a soundboard. The slight missing parts are supplemented with audience sound sources that appear for the first time and are completely recorded. Both use first-generation sources, and the sound quality is unbeatable. The pitch adjustment is also perfectly adjusted. Additionally, as bonus tracks, the unedited AUD-only versions of the three songs that were supplemented with SBD+AUD in the main volume are included. This makes it the best title in terms of sound quality and content. Above all, since this is a concert with few previously released records, many fans may be hearing this for the first time.
