Description

After finishing their hard work on March 14th, ZEP headed to Copenhagen the next day. On this day, they were scheduled to perform at two clubs in the same city, but since there was no TV recording like the previous day, it is not difficult to imagine that they were able to perform two shows with ease. After all, ZEP was young in 1969. What is noteworthy about these two appearances is that ZEP was the headliner at both shows, so unlike the previous day, they were able to fully demonstrate their unique staging. On the contrary, this tour had a lot of media exposure, such as the TV recording of Denmark Radio two days later, so it was a rare tour with few regular live stages. Even so, it was on March 15th that they were able to perform their long and thrilling performance, and yet an extremely high-quality recording remains. First of all, at the first show, a live performance at a venue called “BOX 45 TEEN CLUB”, they finally performed “As Long As I Have You”. This is the best live repertoire that condenses the best parts of ZEP in the first half of 1969, when they played long, ups and downs with ease. It was played regularly until the spring in America, so it is one of the most representative songs of early ZEP. There are many great performances left, but the performance on this day was truly amazing! The light footwork that runs through with wild momentum is unique to 1969, and even March. In particular, the moment when the performance reached the second half, around 9 minutes, the performance that had become quiet once exploded again was incredibly thrilling. Page’s tricky playing that leads such a shocking development is also the best. The day before, he struggled with the Telecaster that had just been restringed, but he played “I Can’t Quit You Baby”, but on this day, he played wildly without any such accidents. This is Jimmy Page in 1969. As for “As Long As I Have You”, the Fillmore East on January 10th, where the audience who did not yet know ZEP were captured, and the Fillmore West on April 24th, where the performance was more exciting than the Fillmore East, which was hit by a trouble with a proven track record of releasing “FILLMORE WEST 24.4.69”, are the best performances of the best performances. The “BOX 45 TEEN CLUB” is added to the top three. Here is the apex of “As Long As ~”, which showed a different expression from the performances of both Fillmores, and a wild and tricky performance. The early representative song “Communication Breakdown” is also a tricky performance, and it is very valuable at this time when the long development was time-constrained. It is a wonderful performance that far surpassed the TV recording two days later. And above all, the audience recording that captures the wild performance in a realistic way is also wonderful. I can’t help but be surprised that ZEP’s wild stage was captured with such an on-sound image at a time when they were still not well known. The second show, “BRONDBY POP-CLUB”, also had an audience recording of amazing quality. This is a powerful balance with the rhythm section’s sound image pushed to the front more than “BOX 45 TEEN CLUB”. Overall, it seems that the first show with its excellent balance will win, but still, the impact of this strange and powerful sound image is considerable. Moreover, since the rhythm section is beautifully captured, the tricky and wild performance of “Dazed And Confused” is a big attraction that you can feel the power of the real performance. “Dazed” in March 1969 was surprisingly blessed with two types of professional shot images, Denmark Radio and Super Show, on the sound board of Stockholm released at the same time. However, all of them were performances that were limited in performance time due to the awareness of recording. In that respect, there is no doubt that “Dazed” here is the original form. On the contrary, the excitement shown by the strongest performance is on a completely different level. This is an excellent sound source that allows you to enjoy the best “Dazed” in March 1969 with a powerful sound image. In this way, both the “BOX 45 TEEN CLUB” and “BRONDBY POP-CLUB” shows are audience recordings that boast exceptional quality in the ZEP live sound source of the first half of 1969, but the previous items were released in a state where the sound source was suitable for release, such as pitch was out of sync, there were careless sound jumps, and even though it was in a stable state, it changed drastically to a finish with a strong sense of equalization, and it was released in a state where it had some difficulties. This time, we paid close attention to that point and accurately adjusted the pitch deviation that was neglected for “BRONDBY POP-CLUB”. Not only the sound quality but also the performance is exceptional, this is the best version ever released.
