Description
The June 22nd performance is the only one of the 1977 ZEP glorious LA Forum consecutive performances that is often overlooked because Mike Millard did not record it. Despite this, there are four types of audience recordings, but they are all mono and have a vintage quality, so it is hard to deny the impression that it is difficult to get into. The second day of the 1977 LA Forum, which is like an isolated island, was based on a file that a maniac managed to put together into the best version by making full use of the existing sound source, and the “L.A. FORUM 1977 2ND NIGHT 4 SOURCE MIX” was released in 2017. The file produced by the maniac “Weedwacker” that became the basis of this title appeared in 2012. In other words, it was released on CD five years later, but now it has been ten years since it appeared. In the meantime, some of the sound sources have been excavated as upper versions, and the situation has changed to one where a better sound quality version can be made now. It is natural after ten years. Among them, the one that achieved the biggest upper was “recorder 4”. Originally, “recorder 4” was a sound source that was used as a filler for the beginning of the live performance on June 22nd, and was also used for “L.A. FORUM 1977 2ND NIGHT 4 SOURCE MIX” (hereinafter referred to as “previously released”). The familiar The Dogs of Doom unearthed this new version. They were the ones who unearthed it, and the difference in sound is clear when compared to the parts of the same sound source used in the previously released version. The roughness and hiss noise have been greatly reduced, making it easier to listen to. Thanks to this, “recorder 3” was used for “Ten Years Gone” because it excelled in terms of sound quality in the previously released version, but the sound quality has improved and the whistling sound flying around in the intro is not annoying… these merits were evaluated, and this time it was recorded on “recorder 4”. “No Quarter”, which was played before this song, is the song that makes the most of the compensation of “recorder 4”, and was used to compensate for Jonesy’s solo parts. This also has a lot of roughness compared to the previously released version, and shows a difference that can be said to be the best point of comparison with the previously released version. What is particularly noteworthy is that the overall condition of each sound source is clearly better than the “Weedwacker” version from ten years ago, which was the basis of the previously released version. This point is also easy to understand if you compare it with the intro of “No Quarter”, or you can see that the distortion has been reduced and it was recorded in a refreshing state when Robert shouts “Over The Top!” at the start of Bonzo’s drum solo. Also, unlike the previously released “Weedwacker” version, the first two sound sources are handled in reverse, and the sound source that was called “recorder 1” there is now called “recorder 2”. Therefore, the sound source that recorded the opening “The Song Remains The Same” with a dumpling-like and “keen” noise is “recorder 2” this time, but it is surprising that even the harsh “keen” sound has been reduced in this version. Just listening to the opening, it is definitely easier to listen to than the previous version. Even just by mentioning this, the upper feeling that makes you think that it is The Dogs of Doom team is reflected in each sound source, but they also re-examined the editing from scratch. Due to the previous problem, the use of “recorder 2”, which has the poorest sound quality among the four types, was kept to the bare minimum from the previous opening to the second half of “Sick Again”, and instead “recorder 1” was used to the maximum in the first half of the live, which also made it easier to listen to than the previous version. And since it was the day after “Eddie”, the performance continued with hyper tension. On the contrary, the previous day felt like a sharp Bonzo one-man show, but on this day, the other members were following him from the opening, which is a big factor. In other words, each member has been promoted to a competitive performance. On the previous day, Bonzo seemed to be flying alone, but on this day, the high tension of the whole band shone brightly. In particular, Jimmy’s fierce battle with Bonzo in “The Song Remains The Same” was a masterpiece. The high tension performance was different from the legendary opening song of the previous day, and the momentum continued. As a result, there were outstanding performances such as Robert’s passionate singing from the prolonged ad-lib of “You Shook Me” at the end of “In My Time of Dying”, and “Since I’ve Been Loving You” where Bonzo and Jimmy meet again. In addition to such high-tension performances, the long break of the rhythm section is also included in “Bron-Y-Aur Stomp” in the acoustic corner (the editing that settles down to “recorder 3” is the same this time as well). Therefore, even if they performed “Over The Hills And Far Away” in the second half of the live performance, which they did not intend to do on this day, they still had some energy left. That’s how all the members were in top form… In fact, the second day of the 1977 LA Forum was a great performance that was not inferior to “Eddie”. It is true that the sound source is still for enthusiasts in total, but it is also true that the sound quality of each sound source has improved to some extent, making it much easier to listen to. If you already have the released version, you may be surprised that it is easy to listen to or that you can listen to it.
