Description

Speaking of the record of the audience recording on the first day of the LA Forum in 1975, the finale is “L.A. FORUM 1975 1ST NIGHT MIKE MILLARD MASTER TAPES”, whose master by Mike Millard was excavated in 2023. However, as the master once again revealed, Millard was late in pressing the record button on this day, missing the opening announcement and the beginning of “Rock And Roll”, and even more, when “Trampled Underfoot” was approaching the second half of the performance, it was the timing to change the cassette. The “recorder 2”, which is a separate audience recording from the same day, has long been used to compensate for such missing parts. Unlike the Millard recording, this was recorded in mono, but it still captured the performance sufficiently, and it had the great advantage of recording even the parts that Millard missed for the previous reason without missing. However, “recorder 2” was only available among traders and was not available on the Internet, so it was a kind of veiled existence. However, last year JEMS released the master tape of the recording of the same day recorded by Barry Goldstein, who was also Millard’s friend. When you open the lid, it turns out that this was recorded from the master of “recorder 2”. As expected, the freshness of the recording from the master is wonderful, and the improvement in sound quality compared to the parts that have been used as supplementary personnel in many previously released items is clear. In the first place, the “recorder 2” Goldstein recording of this day was very good sound quality even though it was mono, and the sound image was close and the performance balance was good, so much so that Millard said, “I think it sounds better than mine.” The reason why his recording turned out so remarkable was that on this day only, he connected a regular microphone instead of the built-in microphone of the recorder, However, Goldstein, who is not used to recording with a microphone, had a hard time with the usual settings, blowing into the microphone many times when “No Quarter” started, and even pressing pause to check the recording level. This was the reason why his recording was called “breathing into the microphone source” among enthusiasts. Nevertheless, his recording was excellent, and the advantage of being able to hear “Rock And Roll” and “Trampled Underfoot” uncut is too great. So the release was realized, but his recording had almost no cuts that cut into the performance, and it was wonderful that it was almost only between songs. Therefore, this time, contrary to usual, the mirrored recording of the same day was used as a compensation. Furthermore, the only problem with his recording was the beginning of “No Quarter”, but it was cut cleanly up to 1:14, where there were frequent sound cuts and breathing, and the whole was compensated for with a mirrored recording. After that, a smooth edit was thoroughly done by using a mirrored sound source for about 9 seconds. This allows you to listen calmly, but this exquisite editing is the highlight of this release. Unfortunately, this sound source was released shortly after the mirrored master was released on the same day, so the release was postponed for a while, but it reminds us that it was an excellent audience. And this wonderful sound quality Goldstein master was released in two types, flat and familiar dadgad remaster, but as the famous album “L.A. FORUM 1977 2ND NIGHT: BARRY GOLDSTEIN MASTER TAPES” proved, this time too, the Goldstein recording and dadgad remaster are excellent. Mono recording, which tends to fall into a dark and flat state, has evolved into a state that looks good on speakers. All the compensation was connected with a crossfade. Since the compensation sound source was emphasized for comparison with Millard, the stereo original sound was left as it was and not made mono. Although it is mono, it is quite high quality Almost complete recording including cheers. Rock And Roll / Trampled Underfoot complete recording. It includes all the encore cheers before Heartbreaker.
