Description

Among the ZEP items released by our shop this time, the phrase “overlooked masterpiece” fits perfectly. San Diego performance on March 10, 1975. Nowadays, when it comes to San Diego in 1975, the impression of the soundboard recording on the 14th unearthed by EV is strong, but in fact, a live performance was held before that, and it was the sound source on the 10th that made the San Diego performance known among enthusiasts… I would like to introduce it, but now it seems that the overwhelming majority of enthusiasts do not know the sound source of the 10th itself before that. The sound source of this day was only quietly released about 20 years ago as an item called “SYMPHONY IN A THOUSAND PARTS”. It is also a paper jacket item from the nostalgic TDOLZ. There will be no enthusiasts who listened intently to the San Diego performance on March 10th with this. In addition to the muffled recording condition, the pitch was not good above all. However, the audience recording itself was stereo sound quality, and it was a strange sound source in that the clarity was surprisingly maintained despite the muffled sound quality. In the late 1990s, when the existence of the sound board recording on the 14th was not even known, this was a “listenable” sound source, but if the sound quality and pitch were a little more stable… some of the enthusiasts who got “SYMPHONY IN~” in real time must have felt that way. However, it is such an old item that it is true that there are fewer people who remember this itself. In the midst of this, the sound board on the 14th was unearthed, and the performance and sound source on the 10th were forgotten. In such a situation, an upgrade of the sound source on the 10th also quietly appeared on the Internet in 2012, but that fact was also forgotten. This time, the unknown upgrade version will be released, and this is truly worthy of being called an upper state. The version that appeared in 2012 was released by a person named Susan Hedrick in 2012, and the state of the sound source is 2nd generation. With the appearance of this sound source, it has also become clear that “SYMPHONY IN A THOUSAND PARTS” used a 4th generation copy sound source. In other words, “SYMPHONY IN ~” used a so-called gene drop copy. No wonder it is difficult to listen to. In that respect, this time, the sound source that has been promoted to 2nd generation is used, so the upper feeling is already obvious. Although it is a stereo recording, the muffled sound quality has been greatly eliminated, and the clarity unique to stereo has been further pushed out. Also, for about 30 minutes after the show started, the sound output from the venue itself was fuzzy, and the balance of Plant’s vocals was surprisingly clear in that situation, which is interesting. Of course, this unique balance contributes to the ease of listening, but it is also conveyed that the balance was initially biased towards Plant. Combined with that balance, it is clear that Plant is in top form. If you think about it, this show was held in Dallas on March 5th (also known for its soundboard), and it makes sense that he was able to sing more freely than usual. He was in such good form that it seemed like he could be in the top three not only for the US tour but also for the whole of 1975. The first performance that combined with his good performance was “In My Time Of Dying”. From the next song “The Song Remains The Same”, the sound balance of the venue improved and it became easier to listen to. In addition, in “The Rain Song”, he changed the opening lyrics to “this should be springtime of your loving” and sang it, so he had plenty of room to maneuver (he also changed the lyrics of “The Song Remains ~” in Seattle later). In the long “No Quarter” and “Dazed and Confused”, Page and Bonzo’s playing is wonderful in both. In the second half of each song, the two of them are extremely heated. Its intensity easily surpasses the performance on the 14th. In “Trampled Underfoot” sandwiched between these, Plant gets too excited and makes a mistake in the song structure (very amusing), but in the second half, Page plays free phrases, which is also impressive. And Bonzo, who hits aggressively until the guitar solo of “Stairway To Heaven”, is also great! If you think about it, the next day was Long Beach, and the moment when the climax of the 1975 US tour started was San Diego on the 10th. Although it was improved from “SYMPHONY IN A THOUSAND PARTS” for this release, the unstable pitch rise that was noticeable from around “Moby Dick” was thoroughly adjusted. It has been reborn in a stable state that is incomparable to the original state, and the sound source that originally showed a wonderful upper performance has finally become easier to listen to and is sealed on CD. Although it is an audience recording with a flaw in the roughness of hiss noise, it is still an upper performance that can be “listened to”. And above all, the performance on this day was overwhelmingly wonderful! Live at Sports Arena, San Diego, CA. USA 10th March 1975 ★A wonderful and unique source with a recording time of 2 hours and 50 minutes. For some reason, the only one that has been released in the past is TDOLZ (using 4th Gen).
