Description

ISS’s masterpiece demo series, which has been well-received with “ANIMALIZE SESSIONS” and “PSYCHO CIRCUS DEMOS & OUTTAKES”, is now available. The third installment, “REVENGE”, is now available. “REVENGE” is the last masterpiece by KISS without makeup, dedicated to the late Eric Carr, but it is also known for the leak of demo sound sources that show the backstage of the production. This work is a CD of the leaked sound source from the highest version master. The quality is superb. Compared to “PSYCHO CIRCUS DEMOS & OUTTAKES” introduced the other day, the sound production is thin, but that is not a problem of sound quality, but a matter of the production stage. Compared to the “PSYCHO CIRCUS” edition, which was almost finished, this work has many backing takes. There is no overdub or processing, and the raw sound of the instruments is exposed. Rather, this work has a better sense of synchronization that flows directly into the brain. Moreover, the pitch of this work, which was crazy in the previous group (about 30% of a semitone), is normal. The previously released takes have been reborn. The composition is also very different from the “PSYCHO CIRCUS” version. In the “PSYCHO CIRCUS” version, all the demos were available and it was a “different version of the masterpiece”, but this work only includes 8 of the 12 songs on the album. Instead (?), some songs have multiple takes, so you can follow the production stages. The demo tape itself seems to be recorded in (roughly) chronological order, but here we will introduce them song by song. Heart Of Chrome (3 takes) The first one to appear is “Heart Of Chrome”, which is a revival of the collaboration between Paul Stanley and Vinnie Vincent. Three takes of “Instrumental”, “Scat Vocals”, and “Expo Instrumental” are included. “Instrumental” is literally a version without vocals. Although it is only backing, the degree of completion is quite high. I don’t know if the final version and the take are the same, but the twins are well intertwined and the sound is superb. Next up is “Scat Vocals”, which is a temporary vocal over an almost complete backing. Although it is sung in a meaningless scat, it is not just humming, but also has a strong shout with a pronunciation that sounds like lyrics. It is a take that can be listened to normally. The third is the “Expo Instrumental” version recorded at the end of this work. The sound quality is about two ranks lower for this one, but it is a take where you can hear not only the backing but also the hot and aggressive lead guitar. Take It Off (3 takes) Like “Heart Of Chrome”, it is a co-written song with former ALICE COOPER BAND muscular guitarist Kane Roberts, which has the most takes recorded, three times. There are two “Instrumental” versions and “Scat Vocals”. It is good to compare the two backings, but the “Scat Vocals” version is what catches your ear. It’s a completely meaningless Hanamogera language, but it’s interesting because it sounds like it has meaning. Does Paul have some lyrics in his head, or is it a special skill of improvisation? Tough Love (2 takes) The only song on “REVENGE” written by Bruce Kulick. Here too, you can listen to two takes, “Instrumental” and “Scat Vocals”. In “Scat Vocals”, he starts singing “I want to take you down” quite clearly, making you think “Oh, the lyrics are ready”, but it’s funny how it quickly becomes Hanamogera. Moreover, it breaks down into a vague humming more than other songs. It’s common to have demos where only the chorus is decided, but it’s rare to have only the opening line decided. It’s also an interesting take to see what Paul uses as a foothold to write. Thou Shalt Not (2 takes) Up until now, it’s been Paul’s songs, but finally Gene’s songs are here. You can enjoy it in two takes, “Instrumental” and “Expo Alternate Version”. The individuality of Paul and Gene has been a powerful weapon for KISS, but when you listen to the instrumental version like this, the difference in style is striking even without the vocals. “Expo Alternate Version” has lyrics and solid vocals. Others (4 songs, 4 takes) “Just I Wanna (Instrumental)”, “Every Time I Look At You (Scat Vocals)”, “Unholy (Alternate Version)”, “Paralyzed (Extended Mumble)” This album also includes one take of each of the four demo songs. “Just I Wanna”, co-written by Vinnie and Paul, is only included in one take of the “Instrumental” version. It starts with a cappella and pushes forward with a catchy chorus, so the instrumental version is quite unsatisfying. Instead, the riffs and backing hidden in the shadow of the thick chorus are clearly visible in detail, making it a demo-like take. “Every Time I Look At You”, sung earnestly by Paul, is an early version without lyrics. But even more than the lyrics, the backing is only acoustic guitar and piano. It’s a gem of a take that highlights the beautiful melody because of its simplicity. “Unholy” is a heavy take that is really brutal. The sound quality of this take is about two levels lower, but it raises the power of the creaking guitar several times. Maybe they made it to see what it would be like if it was low-fi… I’m so addicted to it that I can’t help but fantasize about it. “Paralyzed” is a 30-second part recording. …A total of 8 songs, 14 takes, and 54 minutes and 51 seconds of treasures. With many instrumentals, this is a demo album that “details the production process” rather than “another version of a masterpiece”. This is a piece that depicts the inside story of the studio with the best master sound and precisely tuned pitch. Following “ANIMALIZE” and “PSYCHO CIRCUS”, this is the third installment of the series of demos leaked by related parties. The demo album of the last masterpiece of no-makeup KISS “REVENGE”, the leaked sound source, was made into a CD from the highest version master, and the pitch that was boldly out of sync in the previous release is now accurately adjusted to the highest version. The backing instrumental take has a vivid, raw sound without overdubs or processing, and in the temporary version by Paul, the scat that should be meaningless sounds like an unknown language, which is interesting.
