Description

This time, we will release not only the Kinks’ 1981 theater gig by Mike Millard, but also the first appearance sound source from the 1995 Japan performance, which was a big hit at the time. Following the great success of the 1993 Japan performance, and also promoting the unplugged-flavored live album “TO THE BONE” that was popular at the time, the Kinks’ return to Japan in 1995 was realized with a short interval. As a result, thanks to the great excitement of the set list that was a large amount of the old repertoire over 1993, several items have been released in real time from Tokyo and Osaka. Among them, the Nagoya performance was a performance that even the set list is often forgotten. It seems that the reason for this is that not only the items but also the sound source itself was not circulated among traders, but this time we will release it from the uniquely obtained DAT audience master of such a phantom 1995 Nagoya performance. The sound source was provided by the same taper as the 1993 Nagoya performance “NAGOYA 1993 DAT MASTER” that impressed enthusiasts last year. In that case, the quality of the audience recording is guaranteed, but the sound source this time is a bit distorted. It was not a mistake in the recording level, but a problem with the sound output of the venue on the day. I, who am writing this nonsense, witnessed all of the Kinks’ visits to Japan in the Kanto area in 1995, and there were no such problems. However, the testimony of “the sound output of the venue was loud” was flying around from the time when it was a unanimous voice from the maniacs who participated in the Nagoya performance. Among them, the volume of Dave Davies’ guitar seems to have been at a considerable level, and this is backed up by the sound source that appeared for the first time this time. Indeed, the sound of his guitar is particularly distorted, not the whole performance. This is noticeable at the beginning of the live, so it would be wise to play it from speakers rather than headphones. Fortunately, it becomes much easier to hear from around “Apeman”, where his guitar performance becomes more subdued. Also, as applies to all Kinks live performances of this era, it is interesting that the song selection for the day changes at the discretion of Ray Davies. On this day, “Apeman” was followed by a sudden performance of “Death of a Clown” sung by Dave. The same song was also sung in Shibuya on the first day of the tour, with Ray giving the title to Dave, but on this day there was not even such an MC, and it was as if Ray had started playing after giving his brother a wink. And this performance was also very easy to listen to. Dave is really good at guitar. Ironically, it is because of the balance that his sound is focused on that Dave’s outstanding playing can be enjoyed in a real way. It is no exaggeration to say that he was the only guitarist in a British band in the 1960s who was able to easily adapt to the changing times, and there is no doubt that he is underrated. And the avalanche in the second half of the live performance, starting with the super high-tension “David Watts”, was spectacular. This was also the only day in the 1995 Japan tour that ended with a short set list of about 20 songs. If you listen to the recording this time, you can even hear that they were so excited that they ran out of breath. It may have been the third day after two performances in Osaka. The Kinks’ phantom 1995 Nagoya performance, which had not even been available to traders until now, has finally been unveiled in this shocking release, and the performance at the end is just amazing!
