Description
Joni Mitchell of the jazz era toured the United States with Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny and others. The soundboard album is now available. This work includes “August 25, 1979 Forest Hills Performance”. This is a stereo soundboard recording recorded in one act of “1979 TOUR OF NORTH AMERICA”. From this tour, there is also the traditional official version “SHADOWS AND LIGHT”, but this work is a separate performance. First, let’s check the show’s position from the schedule at that time.・May 27th: Appearance at UC BERKELEY JAZZ FESTIVAL [“MINGUS” released on June 13th] ・June 15th: Appearance at PLAYBOY JAZZ FESTIVAL “1979 TOUR OF NORTH AMERICA” ・August 3rd-23rd (13 performances)・August 25th: Forest Hills performance ←★This work★ ・August 27th – September 8th (6 performances) ・September 9th: Santa Barbara performance ← *Official “SHADOWS AND LIGHT” ・September 12th Sunday – 16th (5 performances) This is Joni Mitchell in 1979. In May, they appeared at the legendary “UC BERKELEY JAZZ FESTIVAL”, but the tour was held in August/September after the release of “MINGUS”. It was held for a total of 26 times, and the Forest Hills performance of this work was the 14th performance. It was a concert about two weeks before “SHADOWS AND LIGHT”. This show has long been known for the existence of soundboard recordings, but this work is the highest version of it. It has been carefully mastered and refined by overseas core enthusiasts. The level of polish is not that great. The original sound is of a vintage level, and there are frequent pitch deviations and sound fluctuations. Moreover, the direction of deviation seemed to change randomly. Normally, it can’t be helped that it would be dismissed as “I’m just grateful to be able to listen to it” or “the type that can’t be fixed,” but the maniac who worked on this work was different. Each defect was carefully repaired, and it took several years to create a solid sense of stability. In fact, the sound of this work is truly wonderful. As expected, the feel of the sound cannot be compared to the official version of “SHADOWS AND LIGHT”, but the seamless and beautiful playback feeling without any discomfort is amazing. Of course, the close contact of the stereo sound board and the cleanly separated mix are wonderful, and you can fully enjoy Joni’s singing voice and the gorgeous backing ensemble. What is drawn with such a reborn sound is a show that is similar to “SHADOWS AND LIGHT” but different. Of course, since it is the same tour, the band is the same, and in addition to Jaco, Brecker, and Metheny, Don Alias and Lyle Mays are also available, and members of THE PERSUASIONS will also appear. However, the set has changed slightly. Here, let’s summarize while comparing it with the official version. Reprise era (3 songs)・Ladies of the Canyon: Big Yellow Taxi (★) / Woodstock・Blue: The Last Time I Saw Richard (★) Asylum era (15 songs)・Court and Spark: Just Like This Train (★) / Free Man In Paris / Raised On Robbery ・Summer Grass Invitation: In France They Kiss On Main Street / Edith And The Kingpin / Shadows And Light ・Escape: Coyote / Amelia / Hejira / Black Crow / Furry Sings The Blues・Don Juan’s Shrew: Dreamland・Mingus: Goodbye Pork Pie Hat/The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines/God Must be A Boogie Man Others・Why Do Fools Fall In Love (THE BEACH BOYS) *Note: “★” The marked songs are songs that cannot be heard on “SHADOWS AND LIGHT”. …and it looks like this. In 2002, a complete version of “SHADOWS AND LIGHT” was released on DVD, but this work includes three repertoire songs that cannot be heard there. Of course, other numbers will also be performed live once in a while. Jaco’s color is more vivid than on the album “MINGUS”, and Brecker’s tenor is also exquisite. Metheny and Lyle played exquisite solos, and Arias, who included congas, became the keystone of the ensemble and controlled everyone. You can enjoy every detail of the performance as if it were an ironclad band on the stereo sound board, and listen carefully to the more profound and majestic “Shadows And Light” and the doo-wop flavor of “Why Do Fools Fall In Love.” You can enjoy it. This is a masterpiece soundboard album that was reborn with a huge amount of time and effort by enthusiastic enthusiasts. “Another SHADOWS AND LIGHT” where you can enjoy songs that cannot be heard on the official live album and completely different performances.
