Description
A complete recording of Coltrane’s two famous performances from 1961! ! ! The main part is the performance at the festival “Music At Newport” on July 1, 1961, which was recorded in the first half of the CD. This is because the well-known festival “Newport Jazz Festival” was rejected as a “Newport Jazz Festival” in 1961 due to the uproar that occurred the previous year in 1960, and instead, another promoter (probably) decided to hold “Music At Jazz Festival” in 1961. It seems that it was held as “Newport”. As for the performance itself on the day, “Impressions” and “My Favorite Things” could be heard quietly from the analog LP era, but in recent years, a super high-quality version with an outstanding freshness of about 30 minutes including “Naima” has been distributed, and it suddenly became popular. As it spread, it gave rise to a variety of titles. There are already several titles made overseas for large stores, but unfortunately, most of these previously released releases have been subjected to excessive hiss reduction, resulting in a strong digital smell such as swooshes and clinks, and AM radio. The sound was thin and lacked depth, or the pitch remained out of order, so there was nothing definitive about it, but this edition has almost solved the problems of the existing editions. It can be said to be the definitive edition. In order to preserve the freshness of the original sound, this edition does not perform any hiss reduction, but only performs the necessary minimum processing such as left and right EQ and phase adjustment, pitch review, and volume adjustment. There are occasional slight distortions such as in the beginning of the intro, but we intentionally left them in order to prioritize freshness, and the clear and fresh sound is realistically reproduced from beginning to end. The recording itself is a monaural soundboard, and the freshness is outstanding. Coltrane’s saxophone at the beginning of “Impressions” is very vivid, and perhaps because of the extreme mixing, the sound is so vivid that when you listen to it with headphones, it feels like he’s playing right in front of you. Looking at the materials, this “Impressions” is one of the earliest existing performances, and the theme melody is different from later performances and is very fresh. Also, perhaps because of the mix, it has an outstanding sense of speed (instead, the snare drum is off here), making it a must-listen take. In “My Favorite Things”, the intro is slightly cut in, and there are some mistones at the beginning of the performance, but fortunately at this point, the mixing, which was extreme at the beginning of the live performance, has been improved, and a very easy-to-listen sound is developed. The second half of the CD includes the performance in Helsinki on November 22, 1961. This is also a familiar live performance that has been recorded on several previously released editions, and the official “Live Trane” edition also includes nearby live recordings, but this Helsinki performance is not included. The sound quality is like an FM monaural air check at the time, and it can’t be denied that it is less fresh than the Newport recorded in the first half of this time, but there are still a lot of songs from the time, such as a live take of “Blue Train”, which is not very common. It can be said that it is a sufficiently valuable sound source as a “Lost Trane” sound source. Regarding this part, many of the previously released records had a strong hiss reduction and a very dull and muddy sound, and the freshness was clearly inferior. This time, the mastering was done with a focus on freshness, with an eye toward hiss. You may be surprised at the amount of hiss at the beginning, but during the performance you can watch it without worrying. Also, in terms of recorded content, it has an advantage over the previously released editions in that it includes some minor but important points, and for some reason the gaps between songs on the previously released editions were shortened due to editing (for example, Blue Train and I Want To). -In between songs, the intro of “I Want To” overlaps with the audience’s applause) is probably recorded exactly as it actually is (it overlaps a little on this edition, but there is no sense of discomfort in the way it overlaps). In addition, in the existing version of track 7 “Impressions”, perhaps due to the editing between songs, there is no footstep count at the beginning and the performance starts with the audience’s applause, but on this version, after the applause, there is a short pause ( Air), and then the performance starts with a foot count. Furthermore, there is a big difference in the ending of the 8th track “My Favorite Things”. In many existing editions, less than 10 seconds of the ending part is edited and cross-faded with the cheers, but this edition has an uncut ending. You can also enjoy the parts. The cheering part after the performance is less than 10 seconds long, but it is recorded for a long time. If you have the existing version, please listen to it and compare. Furthermore, only one bonus song is recorded from the Copenhagen performance on November 20th, and the bonus part is also carefully mastered.
