Description
This is an astonishing sound source that will be coveted by enthusiasts, recorded from a live performance performed at “Music at Newport” in 1961, which has been corrected to normal pitch and remastered from an excavated reel-to-reel master. This year’s festival was held in the same Newport location, but with the word “jazz” removed from the name due to the uproar from the audience the previous year, but many jazz musicians still participated. It goes without saying that Coltrane was a notable artist. The quartet performance (M4 is a quintet with two bassists) is a performance that can be said to be a symbol of mode jazz. McCoy’s block chords are clear in “Impressions,” “Naima,” and “My Favorite Thing,” making this an undeniably valuable performance where you can hear Coltrane’s modal playing style. This sound source has been released once as an LP by “Musi ca Jazz”, but as a CD it is a valuable piece of music that has only been released as a super collector’s sound source with no label or number.
