Description

John Cale appeared at an outdoor event held in Liverpool, England on May 26, 2017. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of VU’s first album, “The Velvet Underground & Nico,” they performed a live performance of the entire album, which was recorded in a complete 93-minute multi-camera mix based on various audience footage. Several types of good audience footage were professionally edited, and some parts were of professional shot quality, with stable angles as the main focus, and good shots from close range were also inserted throughout. And this special live performance, which was said to be a miracle night, was a format in which Cale, the remaining original member, invited artists currently active in the British underground scene as guests to his trio band to perform VU numbers, including The Kills led by Kate Moss’ ex-husband Jamie Hince, the ultimate anti-establishment indie band Fat White Family, Super Furry Animals, and the unique band Clinic, where everyone dressed in doctor’s costumes, Wild Beasts, and many other guests participated. The live performance, which began with great expectations, began with “I’m Waiting for the Man,” which started with Cale hitting the piano repeatedly, and suddenly a large number of bananas were thrown from the stage into the audience. Then it was connected to “White Light White Heat” from the second album, and after that, the numbers from that banana album were performed one after another, and of course Cale’s viola was featured in “Venus in Furs.” In addition, female vocals that recall Nico add a touch of elegance to “Femme Fatale” and “Sunday Morning,” and the band expresses a gloomy and stylized worldview with “Black Angel’s Death Song” and “European Son.” The main part ends with “Heroin,” a tribute to Lou Reed. Then, in response to the encore from the large crowd, all the guests who appeared that day appeared and performed “Sister Ray”! This is the origin of noise music, which can be said to be a symbol of VU in the 1960s, and it continues for more than 20 minutes, even more than the album, and ends with a grand finale. This one-night miracle live performance is recorded in the best quality, and disc:2 also includes 71 minutes of professional shot footage of Cale’s studio live performance in 2012, as well as video clips produced during his activities since 2011. In particular, the newly recorded “If You Were Still Around” is dedicated to his friend Lou Reed, and features footage of Lou and Nico in their younger days. The classic song “Hallelujah,” re-recorded in 2016, has a suspenseful and meaningful video. In addition, a studio live performance in Seattle in 2012, “Guts” and other songs are performed, developing a cool rock sound. A new legend is here, transcending 50 years of time and space since the birth of the Velvet Underground.
