Description
Joe Henderson appeared at the “Jazz Jamboree” held at Congress Hall in Warsaw, Poland on October 25, 1992. He was joined by George Mraz and Al Foster. This trio performance by these three musicians is a condensed representation of the charm of Henderson’s mature period, where he used minimal notes as his weapon. Because there is no piano in the lineup, the presence of each note of Henderson’s tenor saxophone stands out, George Mraz’s bass supports the music from the low end, and Foster moves the rhythm freely with sharp responses. Rather than showing off flashy technique, this is adult jazz that enjoys the space, breathing, and resonance of the sound. Henderson is known for his famous performances in the 1960s, but 1992 was in the later stages of his career, a time when he had gained a unique depth through his many years of experience. This is a recording to savor a night like that, where the performance starts quietly and before you know it you are drawn into the deep world of jazz.
