Joe Henderson John Scofield/Switzerland 05.05.1998

On May 5, 1998, at the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Joe Henderson, in his later years, took on George Gershwin’s works with John Scofield—a performance truly coveted by jazz enthusiasts. Presented locally as Henderson’s Gershwin tribute, the concert featured a stellar lineup including Scofield, Tommy Flanagan, Conrad Hurwig, George Mraz, and Bill Stewart. The highlight was undoubtedly the collaboration between Henderson and Scofield. In their rendition of “I Loves You, Porgy,” Henderson’s deep, nuanced tenor saxophone and Scofield’s guitar with its unique chord sense responded to each other exquisitely. Rather than a flashy battle, their mature interplay, where they listened to each other’s sounds and passed phrases back and forth, made for a truly enjoyable performance.
