Description

The Page Crowes was an ideal meeting between Jimmy Page and a band that respected the 1960s and 1970s. Although the number of gigs was limited, the band’s activities were so fulfilling that it seems that most of the performances were released in some form. They were originally supposed to tour the US after August 2000 and come to Japan in the fall. However, the tour in August was canceled (at the time, it was explained that Page had a back injury), and subsequent activities were gradually frozen, and the Japan performance ended in a dream. This time, the release is a valuable record of the first meeting of this short-lived unit. Although, in 1995, Page had appeared on the Crowes’ stage in Paris, so strictly speaking, it was not the first time. However, this recording captures the meeting and rehearsal of the unit that acts together. The footage has already been seen on YouTube, but this time it will be longer and much clearer, documented in a stereo soundboard recording. The meeting took place on June 25th. The previous YouTube video was credited as October 4th, but of course there was no way they would meet right before the start of the tour, and it actually took place in June. The Black Crowes had arrived in the UK (they had performed in Cologne the day before) in preparation for a live event at Wembley Stadium with Aerosmith and others the next day, and they met with Page, who lives in the UK, at Nomis Studio in London and rehearsed for the first time. The first disc of the two-disc set released this time overlaps with the YouTube video, but the sound quality is completely different. It was the sound captured by the microphone on the staff’s video camera, and when the band’s sound came out, it became saturated all at once and the clarity decreased. In particular, Chris Robinson’s vocals and Steve Gorman’s drums were difficult to hear. By the way, as you can see from both the video and the audio, keyboardist Ed Hirsch did not participate in the rehearsal that day and seems to have taken a day off. In that respect, since it is a soundboard recording, the clarity is on a completely different level. However, there is a negative point here as well, and it is difficult to hear Page’s guitar on the first disc. You can still hear the guitar in songs where he is practicing with the band, such as “Houses Of The Holy” (and it was not featured on the actual tour), but in other songs, the volume of the two guitarists of The Black Crowes is overwhelmingly loud. For example, in the scene where Page plays a solo after being dumped by Chris in “Woke Up This Morning”, the sound in the video is surprisingly easier to hear. However, the performance of the members of The Black Crowes, including “Woke Up…”, is unusually heated, and you should not feel unsatisfied when listening to it. As expected, it is only a band that participated in rehearsals between gigs. As you can see from the video, the two groups are already going head-to-head, and the way they feel each other’s response and confirm that “this is good” is much more realistic than the video. They have plenty of room to maneuver when they perform “Shake Your Money Maker,” which they performed together in Paris in 1995. Furthermore, this is a scene that seems to be a rehearsal, and you can enjoy the scene where they lightly jam on the blues standard “Smokestack Lightning” and the R&B cover “It’s Your Thing.” In addition, between these, Chris sings a touch of the Beatles’ “Yer Blues,” giving the impression that they are playing songs that they like. On the second disc, they tackle the ZEP anthem “Whole Lotta Love,” but fortunately, Page’s volume is turned up all at once from this song. Even the sound of his 18th Theremin is pushed to the forefront. Furthermore, the heated rehearsal of “Oh Well,” which was also featured in the actual gig, is worth listening to beyond the level of mere practice. At this point, the Black Crowes’ two guitarists were already playing, with Page playing lead in between. However, it was hilarious that the performance broke the moment Page stepped on the wah pedal and said, “Let’s play now.” Furthermore, the scene where the jam of “Oh Well” transitioned into “Train Kept A Rollin'” could be called the best part of the rehearsal. And at the end, Page bottlenecked and practiced two ZEP classics with the band. This scene is exactly the analogy of “teacher and student.” In particular, Page played “You Shook Me” smoothly, which should have been a long time since he last played it, and his body remembered it after all. Feel the tension and excitement of the heated rehearsal of the short-lived unit encounter with a perfect stereo soundboard recording!
