Description
When asked, “What’s your favorite Jimi Hendrix live performance?” most rock fans would probably answer “Woodstock.” A stage performance that concluded the biggest rock festival of the 1960s with a group that was neither the Experience nor the Band of Gypsies. Above all, it is a legendary stage that will be forever remembered for its historic rendition of the American National Anthem, which was featured in the festival’s film. The power of film is truly immense, and it’s no wonder that Jimi’s performance there was seen as a symbol of Woodstock. Gypsy Sun & Rainbows, who played Jimi’s backing on that day, was a newly formed band after Jimi disbanded, but the band unexpectedly had a short life. It will remain in my memory. It has been a long time since such a historical stage has been officially released in both sound source and video, but the latter cannot be called a definitive item yet. Although the number of songs on the two-disc set released exactly 20 years ago has increased, the two songs sung by Larry Lee are not included, and even the part where he played the solo was cut, and in the end, the two songs sung by Larry Lee were not included. The sound of the human percussionist was almost completely muted. Originally, Gypsy Sun and Rainbows was the only big band group in Jimi’s history, unlike the three-piece Experience. However, in all of Jimi’s Woodstock items that have been released so far, the sidemen’s performances have been mixed out sparingly, and in particular songs such as “Fire”, I feel like it’s an experience… A state where you feel like you’re in trouble. Will a new version not be released in 2009, 40 years after the festival was held? There were high hopes for this, but it ended up being just a remastered version of the 1999 version. However, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and in commemoration of this year, the release of an archive set consisting of 38 discs has been announced. Befitting this super-sized volume, the complete stage performance of artists such as Joe Cocker, The Who, and CSN&Y is revealed for the first time. If that happens, Jimi’s stage is finally here…The track list of the 38-disc set that everyone was looking forward to included songs that were obviously diverted from the 1999 version. Reportedly, Jimi’s sound source was the only one that used releases from their side. Enthusiasts all over the world were disappointed at the disappointing result, where this opportunity ended with the diversion of an already released version. However, in the underground world, there has been a rough mix sound source that has almost a complete recording of Jimi’s stage. It was done by Eddie Kramer after the festival, and I think it was made as a reference for Jimi. This rough mix was leaked in the 1980s and spread on the LP “LORD OF THE STRINGS”. There, the full picture of Jimi’s stage at Woodstock was revealed for the first time, and it became known that Larry Lee was the lead vocalist on two songs. However, only the new opening song “Message To Love (Universe)” was cut from this recording, which caused a misunderstanding for a while that the first song opened with “Hear My Train A Comin.” It has become. What corrected this long-standing misunderstanding was a compilation CD called “500.000 HALOS” released 20 years ago. Not only was “Message To Love” discovered for the first time there, but it was also discovered that it was played at the opening from the tuning before the performance. This was a leaked rough mix (unused in the end) made by Alan Douglas, who controlled Jimi’s sound sources after his death, for the release of the 1994 Woodstock CD. Jimi’s Woodstock stage truth has been revealed through these rough mixes, but in particular, the full-length rough mix by Kramer has been distributed in a form that has undergone considerable dubbing, and the pitch deviation and hiss noise are said to be harsh on the ears. I had a problem. Still, due to the preciousness of the sound source, it was released on CD, but since most of the items were recorded without such problems, it was not beyond the realm of enthusiasts. Finally, in the 21st century, a low-gen version of Kramer’s rough mix was distributed among traders, and in response, Jimi’s sound source circle “ATM” released “WOODSTOCK – NOTHING BUT PRIMARY RHYTHM THINGS” in 2007… ”. Although it did not reach the level of the official version, the upper version, which was incomparably easier to listen to than the previous version, made Jimi enthusiasts very happy. However, that’s not all. Regarding the biggest drawback of the Kramer sound source, which is that “Message To Love” is not included, instead of reusing it from the 1999 official version, they adopted the Douglas rough mix that was discovered in the previous “500.000 HALOS”. This minimized any discomfort in the sound quality. On top of that, the missing parts were carefully patched from the 1999 version, and the result of “NOTHING BUT~” is excellent, and it is praised as a masterpiece that complements the official version in both mix and content. It was even praised by a specialized magazine as “the best title on ATMs.” The ATM series was originally created with the premise of sharing on the internet, and “NOTHING BUT~” was easily available for at least a few years from 2007. However, since most of the performances at Woodstock had already been released in 1999, they were caught up in so-called “official content” on the internet, and recently they have turned into online items that are difficult to obtain. Ta. However, this time, Jimi researchers provided us with the original file, and while using “NOTHING BUT~” as the base, we applied only minimal equalization. To that extent, the title had a high degree of completion. As expected, the rough mix overwhelmingly conveys the original sound of Gypsy Sun & Rainbows. For example, during the performance of “Red House,” one of Jimi’s Strat strings broke, and the scene where Lee played a solo was cleverly cut out in both the audio and video in the official version. If you listen to this release, you’ll want to feel indignant that they cut out the most important parts. It is also clear that Lee’s “Mastermind” was played here to buy time to change Jimi’s strings. His singing voice on the same song and Impressions’ cover “Gypsy Woman” is exquisite. While Jimi is playing cutting-edge rock sounds, it’s really interesting to see Lee sing proper R&B in front of the large Woodstock crowd. The fact that Larry sang two songs at Woodstock is now known even to non-enthusiasts, but now that the possibility of an official release has been ruined, we are once again reminded of the value of hearing it here. . “Mastermind” itself had a successful studio take and saw the light of day in the “WEST COAST SEATTLE BOY” box, but the live version at a regular big event is still only heard on the original sound source! Also, in the second half of “Spanish Castle Magic”, the scene where the percussion corps plays an active role from Larry’s solo was completely changed in the official version, but this was the original performance. The official version of “Lover Man” featured many scenes of Lee playing solo, but it is also true that on stage, Jimi and Lee shared the solos for most of the songs, making it a live performance unique to the big band structure. Realistic scenes that can only be conveyed through the sound source. Jimi’s playing, which was mindful of the fact that all the members except Mitch Mitchell were experiencing the big stage for the first time, was a once-in-a-generation masterpiece, as he gave commands to the band while playing solo to his fullest. Above all, there are many enthusiasts who feel that the analog sound quality suits Jimi better than the 1999 version, which has a strong digital feel, and its current remaster. Finally, as a bonus track, “Message To Love” is the only existing Woodstock audience recording. The sound source was known only among traders, but this is the first time it has been included in an item, and it is likely that an overwhelming number of people are hearing it for the first time. Before the performance begins, Taper’s own comment is heard and he testifies that he “recorded it from the wings of the stage,” so the valuable sound source where the big sound of Jimi’s guitar is vivid is also worth attention. 50 years since Woodstock, this release is a stereo soundboard album that can be called a true document! Dedicated not only to Jimi mania but also to all rock fans. Like Zeppelin’s “LIVE IN JAPAN 1971,” this is a piece that will remain in history. (Sound quality is official grade stereo line recording.
