Description
Like ZEP’s Offenbach, there are some surprising artists among the items that were best sellers at our store a few years ago and were eagerly awaited for re-release. That is Jimi Hendrix’s “RAINBOW BRIDGE COLOR SOUND EXPERIMENT.” This was an exclusive stock of items released overseas at the time, and included a live performance in Maui, Hawaii, held on July 30, 1970. Naturally, it was a rare title that included a soundboard recording of Jimi’s later live performances, so it gained popularity among enthusiasts, and it was a hidden best-selling title at the time, selling out every time it arrived. It is. The recorded live performance is not only a live performance from their later years, but is also extremely valuable as it is a complete version of the show filmed for the movie “RAINBOW BRIDGE”. It became a bestseller because the entire story was recorded on a soundboard. In other words, it was the leaked full-length version of the sound source recorded for the same movie that made it so popular, but of course it was not the first release of “RAINBOW BRIDGE COLOR SOUND EXPERIMENT”; in fact, it was released ten years ago. A standard sound source that even the semi-official CD “THE RAINBOW BRIDGE CONCERT” was produced. However, strong equalization was applied there, and the edge of the sound literally pierced the ears, which has been criticized among enthusiasts since then. In that respect, “RAINBOW BRIDGE ~” was not subjected to anachronistic equalization, and the secret of its popularity was that it recorded Maui’s sound board recording in 1970 with very honest sound quality. The original version of this title was circulating on the internet under the title “MAUI WOWEE – BOB TERRY TAPES”. As the subtitle suggested, it was part of a collection of low-generation cassettes owned by a core Jimi enthusiast. His version is a rough mix of the multi-track tape recorded for the film. As enthusiasts will know, the sound of Mitch Mitchell’s drums was not captured well on some of the songs during the recording, and some of the performances from the two shows that were included in the movie did not reflect Jimi’s death. Later, while the film was running in the studio, Mitch overdubbed a new drum track. In the first show, the drum solos from “Hey Baby / In From The Storm” and “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” are re-recorded, as well as the drum part in “Purple Haze”. Among them, the medley of “Hey Baby” was later given a new mix and recorded in the “THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE” box in 2000, but of course this one has a longer recording time. Also, there are some gaps before the song starts and a part of “Lover Man”, so a stereo audience recording from the same day (what a stereo recording in Hawaii in 1970!) has been released as a patched version. I was there. Also, in the audio of the movie, there was a well-organized mix where there was no difference between the unaltered drum performance and the re-recorded version, but here, the re-recorded song It’s interesting that the outline of Mitch’s drums is so clear that it seems like a rough mix. The second show also included “Ezy Rider,” which was used in the movie, the first half of “Hey Baby,” which was titled “Maui Sunset,” and the unused “Midnight Lightning” (also with audience recording patches). Even Mitch’s drum solo has been rerecorded. Although some of these corrections and audience recording patches were added, the point is still very high that you can listen to the entire Maui stage in high quality, which was only glimpsed in fragments in the movie. On the other hand, “RAINBOW BRIDGE COLOR SOUND EXPERIMENT” is simply a CD version of the sound source on the internet, so the problems of high pitch and low input level throughout remain unchanged, and the rough construction that seems to be made overseas is a major flaw. did. Therefore, for this release, we once again adjusted the pitch from “MAUI WOWEE – BOB TERRY TAPES” to Jimi’s characteristic semitone lower key, and also increased the volume. Not only that, but the sound quality of each of the two shows has been revised, and it has evolved into an upper version that easily surpasses “RAINBOW BRIDGE ~”. As a result, Jimi’s performance, which is very strong throughout, can now be heard in a stable state. As you can see from the scene featured in the movie, Jimi and the band were shown playing freely on Maui’s tranquil outdoor stage on that day. In his later years, Jimi’s performance was characterized by his ups and downs depending on the day, but on this day, he was not bothered by the hustle and bustle of the arena and was able to devote himself to playing in the cheerful Hawaii, which led to a wonderful performance. Sho. At the first show, you can hear Jimi’s lively singing even in the promised repertoire such as “Foxy Lady”, and from the scene where he starts “Fire” as if to interrupt Mitch while giving him a drum solo. I could see that the tension was high. The situation escalates further in the second show. Jimi’s excitement peaked from “Beginnings” (also known as “Jam Back At The House”), which is very rare to be played at this time of year, and after finishing the finale “Stone Free”, he sang “Hey Joe”. Just when I thought he had started, Jimi returned to the development of “Stone Free” again, and his reckless behavior was amazing. The Isle of Wight performance, which took place on stage despite a cold, wasn’t bad, but it clearly surpassed that performance on Maui, reproduced on a high-quality soundboard recording (folk duo Gemini Twins, who opened the stage). An upper version of Jimi’s late live performance (including the performance) will be released! (Remaster memo) ★Corrected high pitch for both performances. ★Disc 1 corrected the balance of the main story to the right. ★Adjusted the disc 2’s omission. ★The sound pressure was low for both performances, so I increased it.
