Description
The legendary 1975 World Rock Festival, which realized the dream of Japanese, British and American musicians with true rock spirit coming together and performing on stage on an equal footing, was held at five locations nationwide: Makomanai Stadium in Sapporo (August 3), Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium in Nagoya (August 5), Maruyama Park Outdoor Music Hall in Kyoto (August 6), Korakuen Stadium in Tokyo (August 7), and Sugo Trail Land in Sendai (August 9). This album is a never-before-seen original master cassette from the festival held at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium in Nagoya on August 5th, and contains the complete recordings of the New York Dolls’ performance, who appeared second on the day, for about 44 minutes on Disc 1, and Jeff Beck’s performance, who closed the festival, for about 72 minutes on Disc 2. (By the way, on that day, the order of performances was Gedo, New York Dolls, Creation, Far East Family Band, West Road Blues Band, Felix Pappalardi & Joe, and Jeff Beck.) First, the New York Dolls on disc 1. This is the first time that a take other than the Dolls’ 1975 Korakuen concert in Japan has been unearthed. Just before coming to Japan, the popular guitar, bass, and drummer (Johnny, Jerry, and Arthur) left the band. The original Dolls performed live with a new lineup of just Johansen and Sill. (Chris Robenson played keyboards for a short period of time, which is very rare.) It was as if they had brought a New York club live performance to Japan as it was, and the Japanese audience was very entertained by their raw and hot rock and roll live performance. The stage had a raw rock and roll style, but also a somewhat theatrical feel. Compared to other bands with a serious mood, the New York Dolls have a slightly different feel to them, but you can hear their great performance, which makes you imagine the reaction of the Japanese audience overwhelmed by Johansen’s shouting vocals. There is a cut at the intro of Girls, but the rest is included in full. At the beginning of Frankenstein, a Japanese person appears. Along with the keyboard SE, he says, “Something must have gone to XX in Manhattan. Then this song was for all the kids without parents. They must have welcomed it. Do you remember when you were a child? You were worse than any man, and you never knew. But you were the best at XXX. If you don’t like it, do it with your own feelings. Then everyone will start calling you great. But you don’t know what to do, do you? Come on over here. And let’s conquer this big city and get our peace back.” This is a very precious scene. The audience cheered for Johansen who started singing here. The last performance was the energetic Teenage News. Instead, the second disc was Jeff Beck, the finale. The recording of this day included “DEFINITION OF BLOW” which can be enjoyed with an ironclad sound, and although the sound quality is inferior to that of the original, this is definitely a very good recording, and it is recorded with a better sound than the other take of the same day, “NAGOYA 1975 ANOTHER TAPE” which can be heard on the bonus disc of “DEFINITION OF BLOW”. Jeff was in such bad health that he canceled the next day’s Kyoto performance and the Sendai performance after the Tokyo Korakuen performance due to a cold, but on this day, he performed so well that even Jeff researchers were surprised. As the final act of this historic festival created by Japanese, American and British bands, Jeff was also performing with a passionate attitude that made me think he was showing off his true talents. As written in a specialist magazine, the performance of Constipated Duck and Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers was so good that it seemed like they were in top form. To enjoy the details of the performance, you can listen to the best sound quality album “DEFINITION OF BLOW”, and this album is a piece that allows you to enjoy the atmosphere of the day together with the New York Dolls on disc 1. It was a feeling that I couldn’t get if I had only listened to Jeff’s performance on this day, and I hope you will enjoy the document of this day, including the greeting from the general producer of this festival at the beginning. The sound image is stable, the sound is extremely fresh, and the separation is very good, so you can enjoy it all at once without stress. The opening announcement read, “It’s unfortunate that we didn’t have time to respond to the encore (by the World Rock Festival Band). I wanted to sing too, but (…) it was quite a long time, but I hope you enjoyed it. I’ve really noticed that Japanese bands are starting to do this quite a bit, so what do you think? I wonder if the people up higher are getting into it? Well, this is a concert that’s not really anywhere else, so first of all, please give a warm round of applause to the staff. Then, please welcome us with warm applause. Listen when you need to, and join in when you need to. Ladies and gentlemen, Jeff Beck, who has come all the way from England!” The Japanese intro can be heard more clearly than ever before.
