Description
He was a member of Ornette Coleman’s band in the mid-70s, and after starting his solo career in the latter half of the 70s, he shocked the jazz world with his guitar playing that mixed accompaniment and melody in the harmolodic style and the funky groove of his backing band led by Amin Ali. Then, from the live performances in 1984 after the release of the album “Odyssey”, the annual “Montreux Jazz Festival” in Montreux, Canada on June 29th and the concert in Scania, Sweden in July are recorded on each disc as 52 minutes of soundboard recordings from the radio on-air master. First, after going solo, he incorporated a lot of influences from blues and funk, and carved out his own path that was more avant-garde blues and funk than jazz, but here he successfully blends the free-style sound that brought out the harmolodic style up to the 80s with the soul blues color seen in “Odyssey”, so the set is mainly songs from the same album. In addition to the basic trio lineup that includes his close friend Amin Ali, the addition of an electric violin creates a development reminiscent of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, making this a masterpiece that also shows Ulmer’s new direction.
