Description
The Ian Gillan Band’s first performance in Japan in 1977, at the Osaka Welfare Pension Hall on September 12th, is now available for the first time with superb sound quality and complete recording. This is a must-listen for enthusiasts, using the master cassette directly, and it is of the highest level that can be described as ultra-high sound quality. The Japan tour by the legendary Ian Gillan Band was sensationalized as the first Japanese tour since Deep Purple, and the Budokan performance was later released as an official live performance in the form of irregular “Vol.1” and “Vol.2” although it was a digest recording. The set consisted of the new work “Clear Air Turbulence”, the first solo “Child In Time”, the next work “Scarabus”, and Purple & cover songs. The live started with “Clear Air Turbulence” featuring a mysterious synth intro played by Colin Townes. The mysterious sound created by Ray Fenwick, formerly of the Spencer Davis Group, a superb technician who is also adept at funky bass playing, and the tight rhythm section of John Gustafson, formerly of Quatermass, and Mark Nauseef, formerly of Elf, is well worth listening to. Listening to Colin Towns’ keyboard attack with a fusion touch rather than hard rock, and the detailed rhythm section, it’s like a jazz fusion live performance at the time, and you can fully enjoy the charm of the Gillan Band at this time, when they were trying to break away from their hard rock image. Unlike the official live performance mentioned above, you can enjoy the live performance with the correct song order and content. The band’s potential is very high, and it can be said that it is a great band that can be accurately evaluated now. It also includes the cover song “Trying To Get To You,” which was later included on “Gillan Fans Only” (a bonus LP from Glory Road), and a rock and roll medley including “Lucille” and “Jailhouse Rock,” which show off Gillan’s rock and roll style. Gillan’s vocals are as good as they were in his heyday, and they’re truly amazing. This is a great album that true music lovers should definitely listen to.
