Description
The last performance of the 70s was held at the Berkeley Jazz Festival in California on May 25, 1980, when they released the album “Monster,” which captivated the world with their world tour with V.S.O.P. at the end of the 70s and marked the beginning of the 80s and marked the transition to disco-funk. This performance was recorded over two hours, with the latest digital remastering in 2025, on a high-quality audience master for the time. First of all, the sound quality is clear throughout, and the sound has been further upgraded by adding mastering processing to some unstable parts and adjusting the balance. Moreover, since it uses a master tape that has been newly excavated in recent years, the master quality is good and the recording time is longer. Another big point is that Carlos Santana, who also performed with Stanley Clarke at the jazz festival in Japan the following year, also participated in the funky lineup of bassist Stanley Clarke and drummer Alphonse Mousone. Furthermore, John Lucien’s vocals are reminiscent of the cosmic spiritual 70s, so he is a perfect match for Santana. “WATERMELON MAN” has a funk development reminiscent of Headhunters, and the famous song from the Blue Note era, “MAIDEN VOYAGE,” starts with a mellow solo piano and shows a lyrical side, and “SATURDAY NIGHT” from “Monster” at the end is a polecal number that is also attracting attention. This is a rare collaboration that conveys the groove unique to that era with the best quality. 14th Annual UC Berkeley Jazz Festival : at Greek Theater, Berkeley, CA USA May 25th 1980 / Audience Recording / 2025 Remaster DISC 1 : 1.
