Formed in 1975 by five members: Benny Maupin, Paul Jackson, Blackbird McKnight, Michael Clarke, and Bill Summers. The band’s sound was funky and powerful, as they were independent from Herbie Hancock’s backing band, who was also a member of the explosively popular Headhunters, riding the black funk boom of the 70s. The band’s 50th anniversary special tour, which began last year, was recorded from the broadcast sound source and featured a performance at a festival held in New Orleans on April 25, 2024.
