Description
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD of the 1980s started with “GRAND FUNK LIVES” with Dennis Bellinger replacing Mel Thatcher. A leaked soundboard of the people involved who conveys the performance in Japan is now available. This work includes the “September 6, 1982: Nippon Budokan” performance. This is a stereo soundboard recording. They visited Japan twice in the 1970s, but their third visit was in 1982. First, let’s check the show’s position from the schedule at that time.・September 6th: Nippon Budokan ←★This work★ ・September 8th: Osaka Festival Hall ・September 9th: Nagoya City Public Hall A total of 3 performances. Nippon Budokan was the highlight performance on the first day, and it also became a symbol of their arrival in Japan in 1982, as there was also FM broadcasting. Although this work is also the Nippon Budokan sound board, it is completely different from the standard FM broadcast. The people involved at the time obtained the master recorded directly from the mixing desk, and made it into CD directly from the original cassette. In fact, the sound is completely different from FM broadcasting. The FM version is mixed to be received by home audio equipment, and the sound is clear and well-balanced. It was a sound that was refined with the intention of “I want people to listen to it like this”. On the other hand, this work is real. After all, this is a mix table used at concerts, so the mix is intended for PA rather than home use. The balance is raw and rough, assuming that it will resonate in the octagonal venue. Furthermore, the analog feel of cassette recording is reminiscent of the 80s. But that’s why it’s good. There was no production that recreated the audience seats at a concert, just live music. It’s super realistic because it doesn’t look artificial, and it feels very close. Although there is no sense of realism in the sense of a concert experience from the audience seats, the reality of the performance and the presence of the members far exceeds FM broadcasts and official works. It is a sound that can only be heard by those involved, and a sound that can be 100% synchronized with the live performance on stage. And that performance is amazing. In fact, this work was not a full show recording, and the recorder forgot to flip the tape, so “Heartbreaker” cut out after less than a minute, and the following “Mean Mistreater” and “We’re An American Band” were recorded. It had become a leak. However, the majority of the show was still recorded for about 67 minutes. Let’s organize the contents here. ●Classics (9 songs)・ON TIME: Heartbreaker/T.N.U.C.・GRAND FUNK: Paranoid/Inside Looking Out・CLOSER TO HOME: I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)・SURVIVAL: Gimme Shelter・E PLURIBUS FUNK: Footstompin’ Music・PHOENIX: Rock ‘N Roll Soul (FM not broadcast) ・SHININ’ ON: The Loco-Motion ●GRAND FUNK LIVES (3 songs) ・No Reason Why/Queen Bee/We Gotta Get Out Of This Place …and this It looks like this. Although two songs were not recorded as mentioned above, it is a big attraction that “Rock ‘N Roll Soul”, which was not broadcast on FM, is included instead (?). Overall, they have a wide range of great hits from the 60’s and 70’s, and they also performed 3 songs, including the recently released “GRAND FUNK LIVES”. These three songs were only performed in the 1980s, and there are almost no records of Mark Farner’s solo performances. You can enjoy the numbers that truly symbolize the 80s with the finest direct sound board. Speaking of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD’s official live albums, they are from the 70’s or the 1997 relaunch era. It was not left in the 80’s. Nippon Budokan’s FM sound board has long served as the “official replacement”, but this work is another version of it. You can enjoy the “Rock ‘N Roll Soul” that you couldn’t hear on FM broadcasts, and the unprocessed live performance is even more powerful.
