Description

Graham Oliver & Paul Quinn came to Japan ahead of the original band. This is a superb original recording of the last gig with the original twins of the hero SAXON. This work is recorded from the “August 17, 2024: Daikanyama SPACE ODD” performance. This is a superb audience recording. Some people may not be familiar with the band name “GRAHAM OLIVER’S ARMY”, but they are the successor band to OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON. As the name suggests, OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON was a duo band of Oliver and Steve Dawson, but in 2021, Dawson retired from his musical life due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The band name was changed because Oliver became the main focus (incidentally, Dawson was later found guilty of child sexual abuse. Although the crimes were committed in the 1990s, the victim, now an adult, filed a lawsuit and was sentenced to five years in prison in April of this year). They have visited Japan three times, including during their time with OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON. This is a good opportunity to take a look at their history of visits to Japan. 2019: OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON, September 6th: Shinjuku Zirco Tokyo 2023: GRAHAM OLIVER’S ARMY, June 5th: Shinjuku Zirco Tokyo, June 6th: Shinjuku Zirco Tokyo 2024: GRAHAM OLIVER’S ARMY, August 17th: Daikanyama SPACE ODD ←★This work★ A total of four performances. In fact, they also came to Japan last year as GRAHAM OLIVER’S ARMY, and Paul Quinn accompanied them at that time as well. However, shortly after leaving Japan, Oliver announced his Parkinson’s disease. This time, a special live performance was realized as their last visit to Japan. This work, which vacuum-packs such a memorable scene, is truly a superb product with the word “super” attached. After all, this work was created by our familiar master, “Western Japan’s Strongest Taper”. The sound has no sense of distance, and the core is extremely thick and intimate. The fineness of the details and the sense of separation can only be called “like a sound board”. If you are a genuine metalhead who has also noticed this work, you may have experienced some kind of “strongest” collection, but this work is a work that makes the gold sign shine even more. The iron sound of such a master depicts the super greatest hits that are packed with SAXON’s classic songs from the past. It is a set that is similar but not the same as the last time he came to Japan last year, so let’s organize it by comparing them. Wheels of Steel (6 songs) Freeway Mad / Stand Up And Be Counted / Suzie Hold On / 747 (Strangers In The Night) / Motorcycle Man / Wheels Of Steel Others (13 songs) Strong Arm of the Law: Heavy Metal Thunder (★) / Strong Arm Of The Law / Dallas 1 PM Denim and Leather: Denim And Leather / Princess of The Night / And The Bands Played On Others: Rock ‘N’ Roll Gipsy / Backs to the Wall / Frozen Rainbow / Requiem (We Will Remember) / The Eagle Has Landed / Crusader / Power And The Glory (★) / And The Bands Played On *Note: The “★” mark indicates songs that were not performed during the previous visit to Japan (2023). …And so on. There are no new songs or covers. The album is packed with the killer songs from the Oliver/Quinn era, centered around “WHEELS OF STEEL”. Last year, there were two performances with different songs on each day, but this time they combined those two performances and even played “Heavy Metal Thunder” and “Power and the Glory”. And the performance that spells out such a treasure chest of masterpieces is also amazing. Quinn is a guest, but he is on stage the whole time and participates in all the songs. I was worried about the combination of Oliver, who has announced his illness, and Quinn, who has retired, but it was a lie that it was a smashing decision. The third member, Gav Coulson, is a master of incorporating shredder solos, but by giving half of the solo to Quinn, the sense of authenticity explodes. And Brian Shaughnessy’s vocals. His singing, reminiscent of the old Biff Byford, is truly amazing. The original SAXON, which is particular about the feeling of being active, is naturally wonderful, but the charm of Oliver / Quinn, who thoroughly pushes the classic songs of the past, is also irresistible. The original will come with Brian Tatler in November, but this work is a super-excellent live in Japan that will incite SAXON fever to the fullest before that. A super-excellent audience recording of the last performance in Japan with Paul Quinn, “August 17, 2024: Daikanyama SPACE ODD”. This is the latest work by the familiar master “Western Japan’s Strongest Taper”, and this time it is an extremely thick product that should be called “like a sound board”. There is no sense of distance and it is intimately close, and the fineness of the details and the sense of separation are tremendous. This is a memorial album where you can enjoy the super greatest hits of SAXON’s past by the original twin.
