Description

GENESIS in 1980 achieved further success with the masterpiece “DUKE,” which was catchy yet strongly marked by the pride of progressive rock. This is a live album by an absolute master, vacuum-packed from the full show. This work is recorded in “Long Beach performance on May 24, 1980.” It is a superb audience recording recorded by the historical master Mike Millard. Speaking of “1980 GENESIS Millard recording,” the masterpiece “THE ROXY 1980” also comes to mind, but of course this work is a different performance. In order to understand the situation around that, let’s first look back at the tour schedule at that time. 《February 15th “SMALLCREEP’S DAY” released》・March 17-27th: UK #1 (7 performances)《March 28th “DUKE” released》・March 28th-May 9th: UK #2 (35 performances)・May 17th-June 30th: North America (35 performances)←★Here★《June “FACE VALUE” production begins》This is GENESIS in 1980. The Long Beach performance of this work is the beginning of the end. It was the fifth concert of the final “North American” leg. In addition to the aforementioned “THE ROXY 1980”, this “North American” leg also left the decisive soundboard album “PERFECT MONTREAL (Virtuoso 057/058)”. Let’s zoom in on the dates and organize our collection here. North American leg details: May 17-23 (4 shows) May 24: Long Beach performance ←★This work★ May 25 “THE ROXY 1980” May 26-June 17 (18 shows) June 18 “MISUNDERSTANDING IN BOSTON” June 19 “PERFECT MONTREAL” June 20-28 (7 shows) June 29 “MADISON SQUARE GARDEN 1980” June 30: Saratoga Springs performance … and so on. This work is not only the same recording artist collection as “THE ROXY 1980”, but also a sister work with the show the day before. However, no matter how sister works, the sound is different. Of course, it is a work by the absolute master Millard, so it must be the best, but the personality is completely different. The reason for this is, of course, the venue. While “THE ROXY 1980” was a club gig with a sense of closed room, this work is “Long Beach Arena” with over 10,000 people. The sense of scale is completely different. However, this does not mean that the sound is far away. There is no way that the recording of the absolute master Millard will be sparse, and the recording position of this work is in the 12th row. As always, the on-line and powerful core is approaching with a lot of direct feeling, and the details are clear. Although the hall sound is thicker than “THE ROXY 1980”, it will not become the ensemble’s dynamism but the sense of distance. Rather, it is easier to listen to than “THE ROXY 1980”, where the applause and cheers were close. And such a dynamic sound is drawn with a full show accompanying the masterpiece “DUKE”, which was said to be the last progressive album. In fact, there are two songs less than “THE ROXY 1980”, but that is just because the club gig was special, and this work is a regular set. Here, let’s organize them in comparison with the soundboard album “PERFECT MONTREAL”, which is the North American leg’s masterpiece. Duke (7 songs) Behind The Lines / Duchess / Guide Vocal / Turn It On Again / Duke’s Travels / Duke’s End / Misunderstanding Classics (14 songs) Gabriel era: Dancing With The Moonlit Knight / I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) / In The Cage / The Colony Of Slippermen Four-person era: Squonk / Ripples… / Dance On A Volcano / Los Endos / One For The Vines / Afterglow And three people remained: Deep In The Motherlode / Say It’s Alright Joe (★) / The Lady Lies / Follow You Follow Me *Note: The “★” mark is a song that cannot be heard on the definitive soundboard “PERFECT MONTREAL”. … and so on. Although the style is one in which “Carpet Crawlers” and “The Knife” have been removed from “THE ROXY 1980,” “Say It’s Alright Joe,” which is not included in the iconic soundboard “PERFECT MONTREAL,” is well featured. This song is a valuable song that will not be played at the end of the “DUKE Tour,” and it will be performed in a 7-and-a-half minute long version that is much longer than the album. Mike Millard loved the GENESIS family, including Peter Gabriel. Although he usually does not record the same band repeatedly, his deep affection for GENESIS is clear from the fact that he has left behind a huge number of recordings. This work is a masterpiece live album recorded with passion. This work itself is an excellent musical work, but if you combine it with the sister work “THE ROXY 1980,” you can also enjoy the skills of an absolute master in different situations, such as clubs and halls. A masterpiece full of the fun that can only be enjoyed with a superb audience recording. A superb audience recording of the “Long Beach performance on May 24, 1980”. This is a masterpiece by the absolute master Mike Millard, and is a sister work that took place the day before “THE ROXY 1980 (Amity 621)”. While “THE ROXY 1980” was a club gig with a sense of closed room, this work has a sense of arena scale. Moreover, it is also compatible with the closeness of the 12th row, and the on-line, powerful core brings the details closer. This work itself is an excellent musical work, but if you combine it with “THE ROXY 1980”, you can also enjoy the skills of an absolute master in different situations such as clubs and halls.
