Description

A historic night when Genesis first stood on the stage at the L.A. Forum. Now, Barry Goldstein’s original master recording allows you to experience that legendary show in its entirety in a single recording. This release features the “Inglewood performance on March 24, 1977,” a superb audience recording. While the simultaneously released “L.A. FORUM 1977: MASTER CASSETTES” reconstructed the full show by combining four different masters, this is a standalone work of Goldstein’s recording, one of the sources for that reconstruction. With a sense of unity only possible from a single recording, this live album allows you to experience being present at the precious “WIND & WUTHERING Tour.” The show itself is the same as the simultaneously released “MASTER CASSETTES,” but let’s confirm its position here as well.・January 1st-23rd: UK (20 shows) ← *SOUTHAMPTON 1977 ・February 2nd-May 1st: North America (44 shows) ← ★Here ・May 10th-22nd: South America (12 shows) ← *THE BRAZILIAN ‘77 (May 20th: “SPOT THE PIGEON” released) ・June 2nd-July 3rd: Europe (20 shows) ← *DEFINITIVE ZURICH 1977 (October 8th: Steve Hackett leaves / 14th: “SECONDS OUT” released) This was GENESIS in 1977. They toured the world, releasing the EP “SPOT THE PIGEON” in between. It was a historic world tour because it was the only “South America” tour in their career. The main leg of the tour was the “North America” leg, which is also the source of some of the finest recordings in GENESIS history. Details of the “North America” leg: February 2nd-5th (3 shows) * February 6th ‘ST. LOUIS WINDS’ February 8th-15th (6 shows) * February 16th ‘CHICAGO 1977 2ND NIGHT FM’ February 17th-March 2nd (11 shows) * March 3rd ‘QUEBEC 1977 SOUNDBOARD’ March 5th-17th (10 shows) * March 19th ‘DALLAS 1977’ March 21st: Austin show * March 24th: Inglewood show ←★This film★ * March 25th ‘SAN FRANCISCO 1977 1ST NIGHT’ March 26th: San Francisco show (2nd day) * March 27th ‘SAN DIEGO 1977 MILLARD’ ‘MASTER’ – April 1st – May 1st (5 performances) The feeling of being “there” thanks to a single recording This release, which vacuum-packs such a show, is a superb recording by Barry Goldstein, a friend of Millard and himself a historically renowned recording engineer. As explained in detail in the simultaneously released ‘MASTER CASSETTES’, Millard’s recording on this day was incomplete, and it was necessary to combine four masters to reproduce the full show. As a result, an exquisite piece was created centered on Millard’s superb sound, but on the other hand, switching between sources was unavoidable. In contrast, this work is a standalone work compiled solely from Goldstein’s original master cassettes. Its greatest point is the sense of unity that comes from being a single recording. From the opening to the encore, the same atmosphere, the same tone, and the same sense of presence continue without interruption. That is to say, it is the very feeling of being “there at the Forum that night”. The immersive feeling of being present at the precious “WIND & WUTHERING Tour” is a privilege that can only be found in this release. The hall’s reverberation adds an even more symphonic feel, and the sound has a wonderful charm that is different from Millard’s zero-distance approach. The resonance of the hall gives the vocals an airy quality, so it’s not as intimate as Millard’s, but that’s not a drawback. The resonance gives the instruments an indescribable richness, thickness, and dynamism, and the ample density prevents it from sounding sparse or distant. Moreover, the separation and detail are superb, approaching even Millard’s recordings. Every single note of each instrument stands out beautifully, and you can even clearly hear the swaying of the tambourine jingle. And above all, the sense of being enveloped, which is the essence of symphonic rock, surpasses even Millard’s recordings. With the addition of the hall’s reverberation, Tony Banks’ keyboards and Steve Hackett’s guitar take on a persuasive power that paints landscapes, and a fantastic world comes to life before your eyes. If Millard has a soundboard-like “synchronization,” Goldstein has a “concert immersion.” It’s the same performance on the same night, yet it sounds like a completely different musical work. This full set, featuring plenty of rare tracks not found on SECONDS OUT and presented with a “concert experience” sound, is truly luxurious. Let’s organize it here while comparing it to SECONDS OUT. Trick of the Tail – Squonk / Robbery, Assault & Battery / Dance On A Volcano / Los Endos Storm of Silence – One For The Vine (*) / Your Own Special Way (*) / …In That Quiet Earth (*) / Afterglow / Eleventh Earl Of Mar (*) Gabriel Era Classics – Foxtrot: Supper’s Ready – Knight of the Moonlight: Firth Of Fifth / I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) – Dazzling Broadway: The Carpet Crawlers / The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (Musical Box: Closing section) (*) *Note: Tracks marked with “*” are not found on SECONDS OUT. Tracks marked with a “★” are not found on Millard’s masterpiece “SAN DIEGO 1977”. While the Millard version boasts “superb sound + reconstruction using four masters,” this release offers “superb sound × the experience of a single recording.” Both are sister works with contrasting personalities, despite being from the same night and performance. You can experience the immersive feeling of being “at the Forum that night” amidst the hall’s reverberation. And you can fully immerse yourself in the essence of the fantastic progressive rock by the four-member Genesis—a cultural heritage full of such delights. A superb audience recording of the “Inglewood performance on March 24, 1977.” Although it’s the same date and venue as the Millard version, this is a standalone Goldstein recording. The thickness and immersive feeling created by the hall’s reverberation surpasses even Millard’s, and the unity that comes from being a single recording makes this a delicious sister work that gives you the feeling of being there.
