A rare live performance by John Abercrombie, the leading guitar improvisationist who has taken guitar improvisation to the ultimate level from a contemporary perspective, and his innovative trio Gateway with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, which reached the pinnacle of his talent as an improviser, is here! … His influence was so great that many young contemporary guitarists today cite Abercrombie as an influence. Abercrombie has played with various members, including his own group, but when it comes to improvisation, his playing in the great trio Gateway, which forged a groundbreaking style in which the three, master musicians who, like Abercrombie, reached the pinnacle of improvisation, competed freely and on an equal footing, was in a class of their own. Gateway was formed in the 70’s, and has since met roughly every 10 years, always maintaining a high level of creativity centered on improvisation while checking and inspiring each other on the results that each member has cultivated during that time.
