Description

A valuable soundboard live performance of the Original Mothers in 1969 is here from the recently unearthed original master. It includes the June 5th Guild Hall performance in Portsmouth from the same year’s UK tour, and the August 8th August 8th performance at Massachusetts’ Framingham Carousel Theater from the summer US tour in the latter half, both of which use broadcast sound sources. Although it is not a complete album, this period of the early Mothers lineup is where Zappa’s performance can be said to be at its true peak. It’s also nice to see that Lowell George, Art Trip, who was with the band for a short period of time, and Roy Estrada, the bassist of the earliest members, are also included in the band. As the band develops a variety of sounds, from jazz to boogie to R&R to doo-wop, the highlight is definitely the last song, “King Kong,” with its dazzling flow performed by a strong ten-piece ensemble that will leave you speechless. 1.
