In November 1991, Zappa himself was scheduled to appear at the special event “Zappa’s Universe,” billed as “A Celebration of 25 Years of Frank Zappa’s Music,” which was to be held over four consecutive nights at The Ritz in New York. Two of the shows, on November 7th and 8th, were recorded in full in official quality, stereo soundboard audio, both of which were leaked by people involved. First of all, Zappa himself was unable to appear due to an illness that ultimately led to his death, but it was a major event with a total of 38 people participating, including his son Dweezil, Ahmet, Moon Zappa, Steve Vai, Mike Kennelly, Dale Bozzio, and other members associated with Zappa. Although parts of the event were later aired on TV and official live performances were released, both were digests, so the audio recordings capturing the entire two-day show here are still valuable. The two tracks “Sofa” and “Dirty Love” featuring Steve Vai are particularly impressive, which led to Vai winning the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance that same year, and the official live performance “Zappa’s Universe” also winning a Grammy the following year.
