Description

Frank Zappa went on the road in 1982 with a much younger band that also welcomed Chad Wackerman and Scott Tunis following Steve Vai. A live album that allows you to experience the scene 100% live is now available. This work was recorded at “Milan performance on July 7, 1982”. This is the best audience recording. Speaking of 1982, it was the year Chad released “The Ship That Came Too Late to Save the Drowning Witch”, the first time Chad joined the Zappa Band. Tunis was participating in the tour before officially joining the band for the next album. In order to get a sense of the times, let’s first look back at the schedule at the time. [March 22nd – April 20th: Rehearsal] [“SHIP ARRIVING TOO LATE…” released on May 3rd] ・May 5th – June 15th: Europe #1 (29 performances) ・June 18th -19th: UK (3 performances) / June 22nd – July 14th: Europe #2 (16 performances) ←★Here★《“THE MAN FROM UTOPIA” completed in October》 This is Frank Zappa in 1982. In fact, it was a European tour of 48 performances, and this was the only live activity in 1982. The Milan performance of this work was the 12th concert of “Europe #2”, which is the final version. This alone may not seem like much of a problem, but in the long run, the story changes dramatically. In fact, this period itself was a major turning point in my career. Zappa had been touring constantly since the 1960s, but that ended in 1982. The following year, 1983, they did not tour except for a few performances with an orchestra, and after that they only went on special tours such as the “20th Anniversary Tour” in 1984 and the “Last Tour” in 1988. We no longer tour as a regular activity. This work is the fifth performance from the end in 1982. In other words, it was a turning point show where a major change in life was just around the corner. This work recorded at such a scene is a fresh and neat audience recording. This is a master released by a core European Zappa collector, and the crystal-clear atmosphere, the vivid core that runs through the middle, and the detail where you can’t feel any echo components are wonderful. It captures the generous applause typical of summer Italy, and the tone is very typical of the audience, but there is no sense of distance, cagedness, or roundness. I don’t know much about the structure of the venue, but the sound gives the impression that it’s a spacious open-air park or an amphitheater with no roof or walls. Each note is extended beautifully and there is no echo. To put it bluntly, it’s a feeling of openness similar to a “summer festival.” And the show drawn with such a sound is wonderful. The Zappa Band cannot function without skill, and Vai and the new members Chad & Tunis are all youthful 22 years old, and are not only tight but also powerful and dynamic. Pop numbers like “You Are What You Is” exude a vivid lightness, while songs like “Marqueson’s Chicken,” “Zomby Woof,” “Doreen,” “Tell Me You Love Me,” and “The Man from Utopia Meets Mary Lou” There are also many rare songs. And the experience of witnessing such a show is indescribable. Although it never obstructs the sound of the performance, you can still feel that the audience is having a great time. In fact, I’m also inhaling the speaking voice, but that doesn’t mean I’m not listening to the show. On the contrary, it’s getting quite hot. “The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing” and “Sharleena” clearly convey this. In these songs, the performer suddenly stops in the middle and calls out, “Stand back, stand back and sit down. Do you understand English?” Normally, this scene would be tense and tense, but due to the humor of the performance and the mood of the audience, it creates a strange atmosphere that is a mixture of tranquility and lack of enthusiasm. The sound is crystal clear, with the warmth of Italian sunlight shining through. This is a masterpiece of a live album where you can experience Zappa’s full show at the turning point with such beautiful sound. A two-disc set that is as responsive as a sound board, yet immerses you in the beauty and reality that can only be achieved with audience recording. The best audience recording of “July 7, 1982 Milan Performance”. The crystal-clear atmosphere, the vivid core that runs through the center, and the detail where you can’t feel any echoes are amazing. At the same time, the atmosphere of the generous applause that is typical of summer in Italy is very real, and it is filled with a sense of openness, just like a summer festival. The youthful performances of Steve Vai, who was 22 years old at the time, and Chad Wackerman & Scott Tunis are also wonderful, and pop numbers like “You Are What You Is” are full of dynamism. You can also experience the most realistic scenes such as “The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing” and “Sharleena” where he calls out to the excited audience.
