Description

Eric Johnson, a Jeff Beck-level genius who is classified as a rock musician, and Mike Stern, a guitarist who is in demand for many sessions, including in Miles Davis’ comeback band and the Brecker Brothers, are classified as jazz musicians. The two released a joint album, Electric, in October 2014, which was realized after the collaboration on Stern’s 2009 album Big Neighborhood. This two-disc set is the first to be released, featuring a live performance in New York in November 2014, with high quality sound, as part of the US tour that accompanied it! The first half of the album features songs from the previous joint work, such as “Benny Mann’s Blues” and “Wishing Well,” as well as songs not included on the album, blues jams, and Stern’s solo. In the second half, both of them finally heat up, and “Dry Ice,” a speedy up number from their collaboration, appears. The super-extraordinary solo exchange between Eric and Stern here is a spectacular version that is sure to make guitar kids go wild! This song also includes the spectacular solos of Chris Maresch, Eric’s right-hand man and also a member of the joint album, and the popular group of Ronnie Plaxico, who is the bassist and musical director of Cassandra Wilson’s group and fuses funk and hard bop, and the superb drummer Lionel Cordew, who joined Stern in the reformed Brecker Brothers a few years ago and amazed jazz/fusion fans, making it several times more amazing than the studio version! Following the collaborative work “Tidal”, Eric, who has been active as a studio musician since the 70s, made his solo debut in the 80s and won three Grammy Awards, performs an artistic solo with Eric’s unique tone and fast playing that is unstoppable to the eye, and the last song is “Red House” by Jimi Hendrix, the god whom the two of them respect the most, or rather all guitarists, who is also included in the collaborative work…Unlike the ugly performance with a full ego that is often common when two big guitarists perform together, both Eric and Stern are top-class, cool soloists who can’t stop playing once they start, but here they respect each other and don’t overdo it, but they still bring out their own techniques and colors, and you can listen to a professional performance as you would expect. The compatibility between these two is also noteworthy! If you like guitar music regardless of genre, such as jazz or rock, this is a must-listen!
