Description
The third installment of Eric Clapton’s excavated master cassettes, provided by the heavyweight Taper in the UK, is a “master cassette” recorded on a stereo soundboard from the second leg of the 1974 comeback US tour, which was followed by the first leg of the tour, where the second installment “Tempe 1974” was performed, and the middle part of the performance in Hampton, Virginia on September 28th. Like the master of “Tempe 1974”, this soundboard source was recorded as a PA out for the engineer’s check at the concert venue, and is the same source as the one that was previously released on the overseas 1CD bootleg “A Drunkard’s Night”. However, since this heavyweight master is only a “master cassette”, the sound quality is one rank higher and clearer than the previously released version. Moreover, this source has been known as “mono” until now, but the heavyweight master was “stereo”. Although it is not completely separated, the sound is spread and the left and right balance is clearly different, so this is definitely a stereo soundboard. The first song is recorded from the same part, but Clapton’s playing quality is high on this day, so it’s worth listening to it. He was not too drunk on this day, and he was doing a good MC, introducing Marcy Levy as a new member, and introducing Dick Sims when he featured the keyboard, showing his calm leadership that was considerate of the band members. Now, let’s take a look at how this performance was positioned in Clapton’s comeback year. : · June 19th and 20th, 1974: Warm-up gigs in Scandinavia for the US comeback tour · June 28th to August 4th, 1974: US tour <August 5th, 1974: Release of the album “461 OCEAN BOULEVARD”> · August to September 1974: Recording of the album “THERE’S ONE IN EVERY CROWD” in Miami · September 28th to October 6th, 1974: 2nd US tour ←★Here★ · October 31st to November 6th, 1974: First Japan tour · November 27th to December 5th, 1974: Short European tour Buoyed by the great success of his US comeback tour that began in June, Clapton was confident to restart his career, and was full of creative enthusiasm, quickly completing the recording of his next album and immediately going on tour again. It can be said that this second leg was booked to let fans hear the newly recorded new songs as soon as possible. Moreover, this performance was the first day. Clapton must have felt that way even more. On this day, he performed two songs, Little Rachel and Singing The Blues. It seems that they were carefully performed because they were new songs. Since the middle part of the concert was recorded, there are no acoustic numbers at the beginning, but the electric set using “Blackie” throughout is a fulfilling word. It has been almost two months since the release, and while it also features the numbers from the popular comeback work “461” that was number one in the United States, it is a thoughtful set that does not forget the bluesy taste (Mainline Florida is a fairly rare repertoire). Speaking of blues, it is noteworthy and a highlight that he played the rare Muddy Waters Honey Bee on this day. The momentary jump at 1’12” remains the same as the previously released version, but this blues, with its clearer sound quality, is a real treat. This is a rare number that was only played once in the first leg, and Clapton’s playing here is very tense with a good delay. This is a treasured master cassette from the veteran Taper, brought along with “Tempe 1974”. Our store will deliver the pitch, which has been wavering about 35% higher than a semitone due to aging, completely corrected. This is a main album with a different flavor from the first leg “Tempe 1974” even though it was released in the same year, 1974. This is why you’ll want to listen to all of Clapton’s live performances. Live at Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, Virginia, USA 28th September 1974 STEREO SBD(UPGRADE)(from Original Masters) (78:00) 1.
