Description
The 1984 European tour, which was the final stage of the Money and Cigarettes tour, is popular with fans for its variety of setlists. However, the only publicly known sound sources were the audience sources of the first day’s performance in Zurich and the two-day performance in Milan. This time, the previously unreleased second day’s performance in Zurich on January 21st was produced by obtaining the original cassette tape directly from the person who recorded it. The sound quality is a wide stereo recording that boasts a clear texture and exquisite sound balance like a soundboard. This sound quality exceeds all of the previously released first day’s performance in Zurich and the second performance in Milan. The drums are captured with a granular sound from the bass drum to the snare and cymbals, and of course Clapton’s guitar sounds as if it were right in front of you, and the quality can be said to be the highest peak in audience recordings. The original master has the disadvantages that the beginning of the opening number is slightly missing, and only 52 seconds from the start of the recording is recorded in mono due to poor contact (from then until the end, it is recorded in stereo recording with an incredible balance as an audience recording), and the beginning of “Cocaine” is missing due to a tape change, but the master’s superb sound quality is surprising. The set list is two songs less than the first day performance, but in the second half of the blues medley, you can listen to Muddy Waters’ “Honey Bee” which is different from the first day. And at this time, it is a very valuable stage to show “Same Old Blues” which will be included in “BEHIND THE SUN” released the following year, which was not yet recorded. The lyrics are also sung in a form that can be called a prototype, and it is interesting that they are not yet fixed. In particular, the final chapter of the song was a pattern of the later live version to be excited with a vocal refrain, but here it is a very rare take to be excited with a guitar solo. In addition, the set list is full of rare numbers such as “The Sky Is Crying” with its deep slide, “Rita Mae” from “ANOTHER TICKET” with Jamie Oldaker’s drums and the rare wah-wah pedal in the middle guitar solo, “Motherless Children” played by the drummer of “461”, and the nostalgic number “Bottle Of Red Wine” from 1970, which has not been played since 1978. Furthermore, Clapton was definitely in the mood on this day, and it is also characterized by the fact that he consciously changes the vocal line in each song, and the high-tension playing that goes exactly along the royal road, which can be heard in “Double Trouble” and the blues medley, shows Clapton’s true value, and it can be said that it was the biggest highlight of the day without waiting for “Layla”. No matter how much I use words, I can’t describe the charm of this sound source. You just have to listen to it first.
