Description
2004 ME AND MR. JOHNSON Tour Definitive Edition Part 2! This time, we have obtained two of Eric Clapton’s treasured masters recorded by Taper, a heavyweight resident of the UK who has become familiar with his sound sources! The original DAT master with the finest sound quality of the performance held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on May 4th and 5th from the promotional tour for the album “ME AND MR. JOHNSON” held in 2004. From this tour, the Belfast performance sound source in Ireland broadcast on FM at the time and “DUBLIN 2004” which our shop has already released as an original master of the heavyweight taper have gained a reputation, but it is a wonderful master that is no less than them. There is a pre-release version of this sound source, but this time the heavyweight taper is using the original DAT master directly, so there is no doubt that it is an upgraded version. This work, which was recorded on the second day, May 5th, is a stereo audience recording that captures the drum sound more clearly and has a full bass range, which is even better than the superb sound quality of the simultaneously released “Royal Albert Hall 2004 1st Night DAT Master (2CD)”. Of course, along with “Royal Albert Hall 2004 1st Night DAT Master (2CD)”, it is at the highest level of audience recording, and we guarantee that you will be intoxicated by Clapton’s stage with this wonderful sound quality. As mentioned in the review of “Royal Albert Hall 2004 1st Night DAT Master (2CD)”, this tour included various topics in Clapton’s career. 1. First of all, Doyle Bramhall II participated for the first time as a second guitar. It had been four years since he had been persuading Doyle, who participated in “RIDING WITH THE KING” released in 2000, to join the band. His high ability, rooted in blues and able to play slide and wah, is fully demonstrated in this work. ② And the set list was very attractive. Following the wonderful opening of Let It Rain, he played a rare song called Walk Out in the Rain, a Dylan number from “BACKLESS” released in 1978. This song was only played at the beginning of the European tour in the fall of 1978, and has never been played live since then. It was a truly surprising set-in. Then, in the sitting set in the middle, he played five songs in a row from the just-released album “ME AND MR. JOHNSON”. You can feel Clapton’s passionate feelings for Robajohn. After this corner, he played Got to Get Better in a Little While, which he had not played since the Derek and the Dominos era in 1970. Although it is a number that has become familiar in recent years, this tour was the first time it was performed again. And unlike in the past, they switched the order of Cocaine and Layla, and performed a medley of Cocaine without a break from Layla. It was probably Clapton’s idea to make familiar songs feel fresh. ③ The late Billy Preston also participated on the keyboard. His unique organ playing shines everywhere. Sadly, this tour was his last live performance before his death. In that sense, it is the perfect recording to commemorate a great player. ④ And the back chorus was changed to black women, Michelle John and Sharon White. Therefore, the chorus has a gospel taste, which has a more emotional effect. All of the above made it a very fresh band and stage. And this second day’s performance was a day with very high play quality, just as good as the first day’s performance. It’s a wonderful content that makes it impossible to say which day is better. That’s why it’s called “ME AND MR. JOHNSON Tour Definitive Edition Part 2”. Clapton’s heated stage with Doyle and Billy! Now, let’s take a chronological look at the topics before and after this concert to see when this tour took place in Clapton’s career. March 30, 2004: Release of the album “ME AND MR. JOHNSON” March 24 to May 11, 2004: European tour ←★Here★ June 4, 5, and 6, 2004: First Crossroads Guitar Festival June 9 to August 2, 2004: US tour You can see that this tour was held in conjunction with the release of the album “ME AND MR. JOHNSON”. Naturally, new songs from the album were also included in the set (middle), and attention was focused on how Clapton would play the newly recorded numbers of Robert Johnson, who he is infatuated with all his life, in a live performance. However, it can be said that the highlight of this tour was in the other numbers. It was surprising to hear the laid-back performance of the Dylan number Walk Out In The Rain from the 1978 album “BACKLESS” after 26 years, but I was also surprised by the Dominos number Got To Get Better In A Little While, which was played for the first time in 34 years since 1970. Clapton is in top form in this song! Not only the first solo, but also the vigorous desire to play that cuts into Doyle’s second solo. It really feels like “This is what Clapton’s amazing time is like.” Preston’s clavinet play in this song is also the best. And Have You Ever Loved A Woman, which comes in without a break. Clapton, Doyle, Preston, Stinton and everyone else who takes the solo here show off their amazing play. In addition, Clapton’s solo on this day’s I Want a Little Girl is as sharp as the day before. It seems that he changed to a Gibson-type guitar only for this song on this day. Wonderful Tonight, which is generally considered to be a better than average performance, is probably the best take on this day. It is absolutely flawless. And Layla with Doyle is still amazing! The solo in the afterglow is intense! For the encore, Robert Randolph joins in as he did the day before, showing off his pedal steel. In Sunshine of Your Love, which he joins in, Clapton, who usually starts off with the introduction to the solo and the easy standard number Blue Moon phrase, smoothly and aggressively piles on the ad-lib phrase. This solo is also great. In the ending jam, you can hear the interplay between Randolph and Clapton. Listening to this, you can hear the best Clapton, who is energetic and keeps the tension up from start to finish.
