2004 ME AND MR. JOHNSON Tour Definitive Edition Part 1! We have obtained two of Eric Clapton’s treasured masters recorded by Taper, a heavyweight resident of the UK who has become familiar with his sound sources! The original DAT master of the finest sound quality of the performance held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on May 4th and 5th from the promotional tour for the album “ME AND MR. JOHNSON” held in 2004. From this tour, the Belfast performance sound source in Ireland broadcast on FM at the time and “DUBLIN 2004” which our shop has already released as an original master of the heavyweight taper have gained a reputation, but it is a wonderful master that is no less than them. There is a pre-release version of this sound source, but this time the heavyweight taper is using the original DAT master directly, so there is no doubt that it is an upgraded version. First of all, this work, which recorded the first day on May 4th, is a very clear, superb level stereo audience recording throughout the entire work. Even now, this sound quality is at the highest level of audience recording, and we guarantee that you will be intoxicated by Clapton’s stage with this wonderful sound quality. This tour included various topics in Clapton’s career. 1. First of all, Doyle Bramhall II participated for the first time as a second guitar. It has been four years since he persuaded Doyle, who participated in “RIDING WITH THE KING” released in 2000. Finally, he brought him into the band. His high ability, rooted in blues and able to play slide and wah, is fully demonstrated in this work. 2. And the set list was very attractive. Following the wonderful opening of Let It Rain, he played a rare song called Walk Out in the Rain, a Dylan number from “BACKLESS” released in 1978. This song was only played at the very beginning of the European tour in the fall of 1978, and has never been played live since then. It was a truly surprising set-in. Then, in the middle of the sitting set, he played five songs from the just-released album “ME AND MR. JOHNSON” in a row. You can feel Clapton’s passion for Robajohn. After this corner, he played Got to Get Better in a Little While, which he had not played since Derek and the Dominos in 1970. Although it has become a familiar number in recent years, this tour was the first time it was performed again. And unlike in the past, he switched the order of Cocaine and Layla, and performed a medley of Cocaine without a break from Layla. It was probably Clapton’s idea to make familiar songs feel fresh. ③ In addition, the late Billy Preston participated on the keyboard. His unique organ handling shines everywhere. Sadly, this tour was his last live performance before his death. In that sense, it is the perfect sound source to remember a great player. ④The backing vocals were changed to black women, Michelle John and Sharon White. This added a gospel flavor to the chorus, creating a more emotional effect. All of this made for a very fresh impression of the band and the stage. Clapton’s heated stage with Doyle and Billy! Now, let’s take a chronological look at the topics before and after this concert to see when this tour took place in Clapton’s career. <March 30, 2004: Release of the album “ME AND MR. JOHNSON”> March 24 – May 11, 2004: European tour ←★Here★ June 4, 5, 6, 2004: First Crossroads Guitar Festival held June 9 – August 2, 2004: US tour You can see that this tour took place just in time for the release of the album “ME AND MR. JOHNSON”. Naturally, new songs from the album were also included in the set (middle), and attention was focused on how Clapton would play the newly recorded number by Robert Johnson, who he has been infatuated with all his life, live. However, it can be said that the highlight of this tour was in other numbers. After pulling out the Dylan number Walk Out In The Rain from the 1978 album “BACKLESS” and playing a laid-back performance, he performed a breathless and angry performance of the Dominos number Got To Get Better In A Little While, which he played for the first time in 34 years since 1970, and then played it over and over again to Have You Ever Loved A Woman. In addition, Clapton’s solo on this day’s I Want a Little Girl was amazing! It was a tremendous solo that seemed to burst with passion for the object of his love. Please pay attention to this song as well. Clapton’s solo in this song has a different guitar tone from other songs, so he probably switched to a Gibson guitar (ES-335?). Since it seems to be only this song, Clapton’s particular attention to detail can be seen. And in Have You Ever Loved A Woman, the solos of Doyle and Preston featured are also great! Preston’s playing here is not Tim Carmon or Paul Carrack, but truly his unique “Hammond magician”. There is no doubt that you will be knocked out by this point. Even at the end, Layla with Doyle is still great! Perhaps Clapton, who announced his retirement from touring in 2001, thought that he would put his retirement on hold until he performed with Doyle. This captures a wonderful collaboration with Doyle, who he was so eager to work with. It is a wonderful stage that shows how fulfilled Clapton was in both body and mind at that time. Even more interestingly, Robert Randolph, who was chosen by Clapton as the opening act, joined the encore and performed his favorite pedal steel. His relationship with Clapton continues to this day. Please enjoy this work, which can be said to be the definitive version during the 2004 tour (although this is the “definitive version 1”).
