Description
A master of a rare sound source has arrived from Taper, a prominent UK resident who is a master of valuable sound sources related to Eric Clapton and is well known at our store! This is a leaked tape from the staff that was recorded during the filming of the promotional clip for the song Tearing Us Apart, which took place on August 16, 1986 at London’s famous club Ronnie Scott’s! This sound source was actually released once a long time ago, but of course it is now difficult to obtain, so this time it is released by directly taking over the first generation master of the heavyweight taper. Anyway, the content of this tape is very interesting! First of all, it is not a soundboard recording, but a superb audience recording by the staff. On the day, a band consisting of Clapton, Nathan East, Greg Phillinganes, and Phil Collins, who were members of the album “AUGUST”, mimed to the studio version of this song, but it didn’t stop there. It is interesting that the miming according to the studio version is only in the first take, and from the second take onwards, it is a live performance. In between takes, the band jammed on the song “AUGUST,” and perhaps due to the influence of the black members of the band, they performed covers of Prince and Michael Jackson numbers and soul numbers. The 2CD contains footage of Clapton playing songs that cannot be heard, and scenes of Clapton and band members waiting during intervals (Phil’s signature song Easy Lover and other hits at the time). Also played is Paul Young’s Every Time You Go Away, which was released on the same day.) If you think about it, Prince and Michael Jackson were superstars at the time (member Greg Phillinganes was Michael Jackson’s musical director). That’s why it was a cover performance that attracted Clapton’s attention, but now both of them are deceased, which is the trend of this era. In a sense, I think you can listen to it with deep emotion. The recorder brought in by the staff seems to have had quite high specs, and its sound quality is described as “Aud 6”, which indicates the highest level, on Geetarz, an evaluation site for Clapton’s underground sources. In other words, it is a tape of an improvised live performance and jam at a club recorded from a close distance with the audience at the highest quality. Here is a secret sound source that should not be leaked! Aren’t you excited? Now, let’s clarify the significance of this event in chronological order. ・February 23, 1986: Performed at a memorial gig for the late Ian Stewart (Stones support pianist) at the 100 Club in London. During this time, he recorded the album “AUGUST” with a new lineup including Phil Collins. ・June 20, 1986: Performed at the “Prince’s Trust Concert” at Wembley Arena in London.・July 3rd – July 15th, 1986: Short-term European tour with new band ・August 14th, 1986: Jumped into Prince’s concert at Kensington Roof Gardens in London. ・August 15, 1986: Participated in the special stage of a charity cricket match held in Finchley, England.・August 16, 1986: Filming of promotional clip for new song Tearing Us Apart at Ronnie Scott’s club in London ←★Here★ During this time, ≪October 1, 1986: Album “AUGUST” released≫ ・1986 October 16: Appeared at Chuck Berry’s 60th anniversary concert recorded in St. Louis (this event was later made into a movie).・October 27, 1986: Participated in Lionel Richie’s concert at Madison Square Garden, New York. ・November 8, 1986: Jumped on stage with the Robert Cray Band at the Mean Fiddler club in London.・November 20th to 24th, 1986: Performed at Boston club Metro and New York club The Ritz. Keith Richards jumped on stage on the 23rd. ・December 23, 1986: Charity show held at Village Hall in Surrey, England. As you can see, while energetically recording and promoting his ambitious work “AUGUST”, he also appeared as a guest at numerous events and concerts. Two days before this day, he had attended a Prince concert. And on this day, he performed a cover of Prince’s 1999. I even feel like it’s a bit overdone. It can be said that Clapton of this year was full of vitality and was in a state of “I couldn’t bear to play”. It is said that this day’s shooting was carried out with that momentum. This promotional clip was shot with the intention of being a single cut of the song, and since Tina Turner, who co-starred and performed the duet with her in the studio version, was unavailable, a black female model who looked like her was used, and a leather model was used. They were made to wear bondage costumes and fishnet stockings and perform as “dummy”. Therefore, Tina’s face was not shown in the clip (the image of Tina was created through the look of her hair, leather, and fishnet stockings). Considering the editing at a later date, it seems like it could easily end with just a few takes, but Clapton and the band seem to have enjoyed this shoot, and the band plays lively for a long time. Nathan East got so excited that he even performed stand-up comedy. It can be seen that Clapton himself was even more motivated after his recent short-term European tour with a new band ended in great success. Staff recording tapes that are rarely heard and should have been kept out of the public domain. What the heavyweight taper has delivered is the first generation master. I hope you enjoy this record as it is worth listening to.
