Description
This is a complete recording of Clapton’s appearance on the British BBC music program “Old Grey Whistle Test,” which is familiar to fans as the first time he saw his “moving figure” in his solo career. This video was once officially released on VHS and laser disc, but it has already been out of print and is still available today. This is not a copy from those programs, but a direct digitization from the air check video master when it was broadcast on TV in Japan in the 1990s, which we have obtained exclusively. At the beginning of the video, the recording data is displayed, which is “July 8, 1990, 0:18.” At that time, it was the beginning of satellite TV broadcasting (WOWOW had not yet appeared), and it seems that commercially available music software was also broadcast in order to enrich the program. Usually, the official version starts with about 20 seconds of “BBC VIDEO” introduction inserted at the beginning, and after the cheers, Hello Old Friend starts with a fade-in image, but this version does not have a BBC intro or cheers, and starts with a fade-in image from the beginning of Hello Old Friend. (It looks like a cut-in, but it is actually a fade-in. By the way, the 45-minute version of WOWOW broadcast in recent years has an even slower fade-in.) It’s a subtle difference, and there is no particularly new footage, so it may not matter to non-enthusiasts, but in 1990, when only video and laser existed, it is rare to have a 60-minute version that starts with a fade-in at the beginning, and in a sense, it can be said to be a very mysterious one. It would be nice to see the proof that it was aired around the time the official work was discontinued. The image quality is clear with no sense of aging, there is no color loss, and there are no problems with the sound. It is well-known that Clapton was drunk when this video was recorded, and when he introduced the female chorus singer Yvonne Elliman at the time, he was slurring his words and saying “Yvéne Elliman,” exposing his disgrace. This is hard to imagine given his current stoic appearance, but it is also a good way to look back on Clapton’s 70s and his career that has now reached 50 years. The stage starts with an acoustic and progresses slowly, which is the “laid back” that he practiced at the time. Above all, there is no fan who does not feel emotional about this opening number being the same as the opening number of the latest 50th anniversary tour of his debut. And it is also worth watching the original Clapton-like sharpness in Tell The Truth and the two songs at the end. Because of this content, Clapton’s side refused to make it into a DVD, and the video has not yet been reissued, but that is why we would like you to see the rare “Japanese broadcast version”.
